Is the hull 'v' shaped or flat bottomed and how much does it weigh. Is it made of wood, fibreglass, steel, or ally. A displacement hull will no go above designed speed no matter how much you put on the back. You really need to ID the boat before you can put an engine on it, there are weight and power limits on all hulls for safety reasons.

If its a fully displacement hull ie. not semi or fully planing its theoretical maximum speed no matter what engine you put on it is:

1.34 X the Square Root of the Boat's Waterline Length

If your waterline length is 20 ft, multiply 1.34 by the square root of 20 (4.48). 1.34 x 4.48 = 6. which represents the boat's maximum hull speed in knots.

Lets hope its a planing hull!!
