My current rod is on it's last legs (the tip is de-laminating) so I was looking for a new one. I've got about 100 quid (or will have in a few months courtessy of a student loan ) and i was wondering if anyone has any advice.
My casting isn't bad I can hid 150yrds on a good day. I want a rod which is a good alround choice, nothing specialist. I was looking at the Daiwa Sandstorm, has anyone got one and are they any good?
I also own an RT Axellerator, which is good for the rough, i want a rod with a fairly sensitive tip and a bit of power, nothing too soft.

Now the casting part, this is just a quiery but I've just been experimenting with a reel in the low position out in the field and I've found that with just what feels like a lob I am putting the lead nearly the same distance. Then when I built up the power i was going further with what felt like less effort, does anyone know why this is?

i was going to buy RT Axxellerator and emailed Henry Gilbey about this and this was his reply "the Axxellerator is a great rod, masses of people I know use them, awesome bit of kit, very powerful, light, fairly easy to cast, but not subtle !!!!!"

he then went on to to say that the new imax rods would suit me better, i looked at these and found he had his name all over there pages in the magazines. I bought a couple of conoflex rods of ebay...............

lol, sounds about right, thats why I ignore angling press, people just trying to push their own product!!!!!
I find the axellerator good when it's blowing a gail, when the tide is ripping through or when I just want to fish a big bait at distance, other than that it's useless!!
My current Abu is exactly what i want, sensitive tip, power in the but and puts delicate baits out a long way, trouble is it's gonna snap any cast now, nice crack towards the tip!!! i was looking for something to replace it. I've seen 13" Sand Storms for £85, multi version, it's v tempting!!

have you thought about sawing off the little bit of the rod tip that is going and having a new tip ring stuck on? will save you that £100 squids fot next year?

I have but it's like the 5th ring down. I think I need a new rod. The tip takes that much pressure i can see it being ineffective and creating weak point in the rod.

Seriously, the man Holden, who knows a thing or two about casting, was part of a review in Sea Angler early this year and considerred the Daiwa was the bees knees. Can't remeber the model number but the retail was just outside your price range so Malcom's discount should put it just in I rekon. If I find the review i'll send you the details.

cheers swelleyman, i'd apreciate it,
all i can think is how nice it would be if you could go into a tackle shop and take the rod for a few casts first!!! i think if i'd been able to do that i would neer have bought the Axellerator.
Did you say poach siad the rod is too bendy? the rod i've got has a really powerful butt i've come to realise i wouldn't want anything softer.

I would do mate but I can't afford it, I let a mate borrow it and it got scratched and chipped . So it's only worth about 40 quid max now. If it hadn't been damaged and I could have gotten a decent amount i would. As it is it's my only back up rod!!!

Bloody hell, that was quick. No worries, cheers for the reply. I only fish extremely rocky, kelpy ground, so an axellerator would suit me down to the ground. they were going at about £59 + P+P on ebay last week, missed out, and now can't find a cheap one anywhere. Seem to be £100ish most places. I'll find one eventually.

If I remember rightly the Daiwa Mr Holden was raving about was the Daiwa Supercast

yeah I paid about £90 for my rod, i reckon you could get it cheaper.
I think the Daiwa supercast is going to be a bit too expensive, unless i can get it a bit cheaper from the tackle shop. I just read i review I'm going to go check out the Daiwa Sandstorm. If it is too soft I'l just have to keep looking!!!

sandstorm isnt too bad , but i far prefer my supercast.
Keep a eye on ebay cos supercasts do appear now and then - the price can vary immensly though
will be getting rid of my sand storm in a couple of months , because my really , really nice cousin in devon is giving me his supercast (what a nice chap)

Hi Tozer,

Had a similar prob myself, with choosing a rod. Email ([email protected]) and ask the man himself. He reccommended the Daiwa 13pm. This is a softer rod but is still capable of 200+ and very sensitive. My discussion with him was also about the Abu Suveran RX. This is a similar rod but has a spliced in glass tip. It is very light, super sensitive and good for nearly 15ft long with the reducer. I have had the RX for about 6 months and it is absolutely brilliant.

Sounds like a good idea, the upercast is a more expensive rod so it stands to reason that it would be better (I think ). But i guess i could probably stratch to another £30. It won't kill me.
The RX sounds almost exactly like my rod. Spliced tip and all very sensitive, but its the tip thats on the way. The butt is just right now. Plenty stiff enough not to feel under powered!!

Don't spend your money just yet Toz! Went to West Midlands Angling Centre at Darlaston (alongside the M6 near Walsall) They do Fresh water tackle mainly but had a small supply of Sea Rods. The 13' Sandstorm and the RT Accelerator were there at £99.95 so the price must be dropping if you shop around. All I know is that both seemed so much thicker, bulkier and stiffer than my Rubber Shark which now looks more like a Bass rod by comparison. I'm not suggesting you buy from WMAC but I'll find out Malcs price for the Sandstorm next time i'm there (hopefully the end of next week - back permitting!)

The sandstorm was £85 in Malc's, which is really cheap.
Good luck fishing if you go fishing next week, with this warm spell it is going to be good for thwe bass (hopefully) back to the other part of my question does anyone know why it feels easier to cast with teh reel in the low position?

I tried it because I was aware that I was 'pushing' with my left, the upper hand. The other factor that I've heard is that it's got to do with length of levers? If the reel is the fulcrum then the 'upper' lever (the bit above the reel to the tip) is longer by about a foot. However because my technique is so cr**p then I'd be better off with a 12' rod anyway!! For me the reel down position feels better simply because the right hand is in control of moving the rod. With reel up it still moves the rod but ALSO has to control the reel? Never could think about doing two things at once! Mind you, I've only been (trying) to cast reel up for over 50 years! In the Straits I have always been able to get out far enough, it's these Monknash places that need over 100yds, so they tell me!!!

yeah, but i hae found, especially in daylight that the extra distance can pick up those few extra fish. But is mainly doggies!!!
