Hi i'm still quite new to fishing and i have been trying to get some distance into my cast. I started out with a shakespere salt MK and I have just moved up to a Sonik NCT 14ft 6oz rated rod. My best cast would be about 140 yards on a sports field due to me being land locked most of my practice is on a sports field. With this in mind I only use a 3.5 oz lead. My question is this will this greatly effect my rod loading up, I could increase the weight to max when the sports grounds are empty thanks Stegy.

I don't know is it me or are the comments to my post all negative, I would love to join a club but with the nearest 45 miles away 90 miles round trip, its hard enough getting out fishing. i would never cast a lead when other people are in front of me so no different to casting from a sea wall with other anglers or members of the public about. But if its not down to weight and its down to me and how i should compress the rod then it would have been better if you could have shared some tips with me on how to do it. I found this site very helpfull when i first started last year but it seems to have changed and i don't think i shall be asking to many more questions on this site.

Not meant to be negative just red flagging up the danger, fishing from beach or sea wall/pier you at least would have some kind of defense should an accident occur, on a sports field you would have none.

without being able to see how you cast it is impossible to offer any advice, even if you only went to a casting club a couple of times you would at least find out what you need to do to get better distance

you might find that if you go to your nearest casting club that there are other casters near to you to share the costs abit. casting is addictive, and unlike fishing it's all down to you. there are some great casters in your area, and they are always willing to help a novice caster. the first time you get a 200m cast away will make your day, and the others who helped you achieve it.
all the lads that cast are a great bunch, with abit of friendly banter:laugh::laugh:

hit into hell and land in heaven, good luck and maybe see you on a field one day:)

Have you considered practicing with a hockey ball.

Easily made: Just screw an eye into the ball with a little impact adhesive applied to the thread.

These balls weigh around 165 grms, but will feel much heavier as more air resistance.

Very good for slowing the cast down and seeing the flight.

A very much safer option than leads in a public place.

Used by many casters for practice, it saves keep walking up and down.

hope this helps.

You say !!
" i would never cast a lead when other people are in front of me "

Most of my "miscast / crackoffs" tend to go in every direction , other than out to sea ?
I practice with 125/150g , 60/80 shock leader ,15 mainline ,albright & uni/grinner knots, reel up & down , ABU 6500 ct .
Best advise for casting is ,break casting down into phases , style , stance ,body rotation , arm position, push/pull, aim high 45/50degrees ,work on weaknesses .
Start slow & smooth ,tecnique 1st distance 2nd . Watch the top guys "Utube" & practice .

Best advice I can give is to practice with the same sized weight as you use for fishing with, or up the size one ouce to allow for big baits, there's no point in learning to cast using odd weight sizes, if you practice with a bigger lead the casting will seem easier when you fish with the right sized one,
