I need a little help and advise please guys. I bought my boat at the start of the season with a 20Hp Suzuki on it. I never acheeved the plane even with WOT and was lucky enough to be given a 60hp Yamaha power tilt trim by my dad. The question is though is the 60hp too heavy for my boat which I think is a pilot 460 15ft catherdral hull. There aren't any plates on to tell me the max engine/weight.

Many thanks guys

Hi Chris,

Well, you never were going to plane with a 20hp I am afraid, so don't be disappointeed.

You are very "lucky" if you were given a 60hp!.

I do not know the specific max limits for your boat, maybe someone will but what I can tell you is a friend of mine ran a pilot 460 with a new Honda 60 Four stroke for a few years and I actualy used it myself a few times, it was fine and actually well suited to the boat, made it very manageable and never showed any signs of being too heavy, they are a reasonably heavy engine too.

The only problem you may have is with insurance validity "if" it is rated for lower hp/weight? - but then again insurance may not be something you need or want?

I am ofcourse assuming you have a good transom etc so if you do not have insurance worries then why not try it and see how she goes on a few inshore runs with maybe a buddy boat along with you?

I know this will look like stirring it but everyone should have insurance at sea. If not for themselves then you do need some sort of liability insurance to protect your crew and other users of the water.

If you are uninsured and hit another boat be prepared for some serious suing. My mate recently got hit by a yacht (insured fortunately) and it cost the other guys insurers £17000. If you have that lying around in cash the perhaps it is a different matter!

Going back to the original question if you are happy with the make and model of your boat a call to a dealer or a search on the internet should reveal its rating.

will be fine i sure most piolets of that size were rated for upto 60hp but dont quote me on that, but i would defo fit it and try it out, she should run like a dream and just perrr along, she proberly will cruise nicely at less than 3/4 throttle so should give you a good turn around of fuel

Thanks for the advice guys I've fitted it today and I'm taking her out on sunday. As for the insurance it was the first thing i bought when i got the boat though it was a good reminder to do two things 1 check that i would still be covered with the bigger engine and 2 make sure the bigger engine was listed on the policy don't want some f**ker stealing it and it not being on the paperwork.

Safety first always:1a:

Yes, we all know what you are saying, the subject has been done to death and he obviously has'nt got a 17k boat and - IT IS STILL YOUR CHOICE in our waters, thats the great thing about the sea!

It's not his boat that's the problem, it's when he hits a Sunseeker and causes £500,000 worth of damage, or injures someone and they sue, could cost you everything you own including your house.

Still his choice! - I am certainly not advocating anyone not getting insurance (and I do have it), BUT the fact is it is his choice and nobody should lead him to think he does not have one - our seas are still mostly unregulated and that for me is one of the very few if not only, places left on this planet where we are not constantly regulated and makes it a very big reason why I own and enjoy my boat!

Well I took the boat out on sunday and I think the engine is too heavy:thumbdown we were at a very scary angle before the boat went on the plane.Having said that we were cruising along with half throttle at 30kmh according to the GPS :clap:great fun but I will remove and downgrade to a 40hp.

Did you have the motor trimmed fully in when you accelerated away ?

No that is right. Check that the trim pin is in the hole nearest the transom though as if it is set out a hole or 2 you will not be able to trim her right in.

The trim pin is as close to the transom as it will go the power trim tilt gear gets in the way of the last hole.I think it has to be that the engine is just too heavy.

If you think weight is the problem, check out the weight of the 60 and compare to any 40's you see before you buy - many 40's are effectively the same engine as their sister 60's (but in a lower state of tune) and so weigh exactly the same.

Might be a bit of a stupid comment, but might be relevant; as a 1st year novice when I 1st experienced my boat going onto the plane it seemed like a very scary angle (& the other half's white face confirmed it). I don't know what your boating experience is but if it is as little as mine was 4 months ago maybe worth you getting someone who knows whats what to join you for half an hour to see if your version of scary agrees with theirs before you spend money!
