I'm in the market for a new reel and likely will be one of these.

I like the idea that the mag3 offers variable control with the mag but I also like the idea of the metal vage on the fathom.
I'm also aware of the micky mouse brake blocks in the fathom but I'd probably convert to use other brake blocks.

So I have a couple of questions...

Any one have any issues with the 525 mag 3 ?

If anyone has converted the brake blocks on their fathom, how many blocks are they using and of what type ?

It does seem that if the new 525 mag3 is ok Its less hassle than converting brake blocks on the fathom. Is the Fathom a much better reel ?

I don't pendulum cast and I'm comfortable using mag reels. I have a mono magged slosh 20 at present.

Thanks

Fathom magged
I wouldn't bother magging a fathom if I could get the braking right.
If I was going magged I would probably get the 525 mag 3.

I did have a 515 mag2 last year that I bough new. I really got on with that and after an initial clean and re lube it ran lovely. Just not enough line capacity with 18lb

Just buy a magged fathom if your concerned about the breaks.
My original 2 fathoms are still running on original blocks as i havnt hand any trouble from them what so ever. But I do also have a couple of magged ones as bought them very cheap 2nd hand

Not particularly concerned but not really a fan of mono mag.
I've just ordered a fathom 15 so I'll see how I get on with it with the factory brakes
Cheers

Defo a fathom, the mag 3 does cast nice but it has the issue of the line getting trapped between the spool and the cage, fathom will last years and no such issue, the breaks in the fathom can be a pain but can easily be sorted

Haven't had any issue with line trapping on my 515 mag 3 I use 19lb rovex times 10, personally didn't like my fathom as I kept catching the mono mag with my sleeve and adjusting the brakes, if they put a clicker style mag adjuster on the fathom that would be immense for me.

Thats the precise reason I'm not so keen on mono mags.

Ok,

I have 2 of the US Mag 525's that I use for beach fishing, great reels no problems
I have 2 Penn Fathoms both magged by Blakdog, great reels no problems
I have one 525 Mag 2 (gold) great reel no problems (that said I do use it for up tiding so 0.40 line minimum) it has never trapped line or caused me any grief at all.
I have one 515 Mag 3 (red) which is a great reel no problems. I use this with 0.31 or 0.35 line and have had no issues with trapped line. I will probably buy another 515 Mag 3 if I can get one at a decent price.

Try it with .33/34 then!!!

The idea of/with a mono mag is to use in the cast unlike a clicker mag so unwind as weights in the air so less mag as the spool slows down so longer casts

My mates 525 mag 3s were constantly getting the line trapped and that was with .35 line, was a right nightmare, only way to stop it happening as much was to underfill the spool by quite a bit, he sold them after a week as was annoying as hell lol

Yes it seems to be a problem with 525's that doesn't seem to affect the 515's as badly.

Common with the 525's and Akios don't happen so much with the 656 but a mile n half gap spool/cage on them also
Fathoms don't seem to suffer it though.
