8th October, a calmer day after the blow, NW3 to start becoming WSW 2 plus the remains of the swell running in from the SW with a spring tide. On the Shambles and launce played hard to get all day and no mackerel showing either. Frozen launce strip to start and a 40cm turbot first drift with the tide still running hard plus some colour in the water. That was it until slack when the wind dropped a bit and a dozen launce found their way into the bait bucket. The water cleared and the cuttlefish were out in force taking the baits and letting go before the net reached them. Still drifting at 2kts plus into the breeze and the bait is taken. The 12lb class bent right over as a decent ray went to ground. Eventually the pressure told and a 95cm /15lb blonde is in the net. The next drifts resulted in a tub gurnard, a 45cm turbot for dinner and lots of baits eaten by cuttle.

Tuesday 11th October, forecast had 10kts NE to start becoming nothing later but top of the springs. Bit more wind than 10kts to start so Espadon and I decided not to go round the Bill with that wind against tide. Fresh bait on the way out - 3 drifts 7 big mackerel before anchoring inshore in 75ft to find some bream, hopefully out of the tide a bit. The wind initially was such that the boat sat across the tide until it turned and the wind dropped out completely from late morning. However didn't need more than 10ozs all day and most of the time only 6 or 8oz.

2 up and 1 up 1 down gear sent down with mackerel, squid, rag for bait and the bream were out in force. During the time there must have had 40+ mostly small but enough 1.5lb ones to fillet for us and the neighbours. A thornback decided it wanted the small piece of mackerel, put a bend in the 6lb rod, about 8lb.

One small bream came to the surface and was followed by a tope, before I could lift it the tope grabs the bream succeeds in making off with it. Definitely a grab and dash. Lost several hooks to tope and several came in when hooked lightly, even taking rag on the top hook.

When the tide picked up tried a heavier trace, bigger hook, with mackerel slices but these were being destroyed by the small bream until a couple of conger put in an appearance, one was 8-9lb, the other a strap. The rest of the catch was 2 jumbo mackerel at the same time, a couple of tub gurnards, scad, small smoothie, and the obligatory 2 dogfish. The scad was put down alive with a 8/0 in the nose and something ran off with it but wasn't hooked. Just the head came back, cleanly sliced off by something with sharp teeth.

A couple of nice days! We were out on the 8th and had a real mixed bag as well with quite few Gurnards (Tub and Red). It was Atlanta’s last every trip as she’s off to the Isle of Skye at the end of the month.
