Been plagued with SW winds for the last week, mornings seem to start off reasonably calm then it blows up later in the day, coupled with spring tides it makes it very interesting at times!

Managed a couple of bass in the harbour mouth this afternoon but the boat was pushing out at 4.5 knots so not the easiest of fishing.

We get the same in Weymouth Bay, if you head out early and get back in by lunch then you can often miss the wind and have more comfortable fishing. Lets hope thats the same this weekend as its showing a bit breezy at the moment, fingers crossed the NW will flatten the sea off so I can get out in the shelter of Portland.

Depends on a lot of variables. Location, wind direction, wind strength [including gusts] tide [height and direction]. The only way to really know is to phone the skipper the night before.
yeah ive organised 20+ charters for me and me m8's over the years and i know its never confirmed one way or the other till the night before and many different aspects play there roll, ive had a few sessions cancelled as it was too windy a few times so i was just wanting to know if there was a rough rule of thumb on wind speeds where a skipper would just say no not today lads

the boats i go on tend to cancel if its more than 15-18mph but it depends on wind direction etc. if i see these sort of wind speeds tho i know its going to be a close call.

depends on the boat aswell, ive gone out in worse conditoins on a cat and it was no problem at all. i know a boat local to me that goes out in a force 4/5 no probs but he has a big cat.

I'm not an expert but ......

I think I am right in saying that moats that are MCA COP2 licensed for 60 miles are authorised/ insured to go out in anything up to a force 6, 32 mph tops. However, far before that fishing becomes very unpleasant and difficult. I've been out on a charter near Portland race in what turned out to be a gusty 5-7 and it wasn't an experience i'd care to repeat.

It varies depending upon the size and design of the boat (cats are more stable) and the direction of wind vs tide etc, however, my rule of thumb is if I see anything more than 18mph forecast on xcweather it is 50:50 at best, any more than 20mph and I can probably start making alternative plans for the day.

I'm sure there are much more accurate ways of assessing the weather than mine!.

thanks rob and skillpot for your replys, ive been looking at winduru (dont know if its the best to look at, also it doesnt give the wind for 18 miles out at sea :p )
atm its saying 16mph gusting to 23, as the forcast changes daily il be keeping an eye on it over the next week and keep my fingers crossed :)

I find xcweather good. It gives current weather and forecasts for channel light vessel which is the kind of area you are likely to be wrecking out from Brighton.

I also look at windfinder as their forecast goes out a could more days, I prefer xc weather however.

Those too sites seem to be disagreeing a little concerning Thurs, windfinder is a slightly more favourable forecast than XC, think you'll need to keep your fingers firmly crossed!.

Well so much for my theory for getting out in the shelter of Weymouth Bay at the weekend. Got up early sunday and got the boat ready, towed it down to the slip and looking across the bay realised it was choppier than the forecast would lead you to think. Ended up towing the boat back home, which is thankfully only 10mins.

Whilst sorting the boat back out again at home I listened into a routine traffic between a 13m cruiser and the CG, the cruiser skipper was questioning whether they should take the trip between Weymouth and Poole, the conclusion being that it was too risky, as the conditions were worst than forecast. So my decision was the right one, which at least made me feel a bit better.

Looks like there might be a window on Sunday this week, so all hopes for a trip are resting on that at the moment as I have still not been out this month.
