We've just returned from the most spectacular day's fishing you could wish for,out of Wallasea Island,on the River Crouch,in Essex, aboard Stewart Olley's 10 metre Blythe Cat "PREDATOR".
The weather gods were certainly smiling this Sunday (27th July) as we set off, stopping for some mackerel on the way - we drifted a couple of small wrecks for bass (alas, only one showed up) then anchored for a short while whilst waiting for the tide to slacken;we then proceeded to our intended mark where all hell let loose...... Smoothounds! Fishing in very shallow water our party of nine landed over 30 fish - a couple were around 8 or 9lbs but all the rest were well into double figures, averaging 14lbs or so up to the biggest at 19lb 6oz - at some stages we had three fish on at the the same time which,if you've ever experienced hound fishing in shallow water,is nothing short of bedlam! Every single fish was released successfully (most were photographed) and swam away to give some other lucky angler some more fun - THIS IS THE WAY FORWARD - DON'T KILL THEM!
Stewart is the most helpful skipper you could ever wish to meet - the boat is impeccable, his service is second-to-none,even his tea/coffee is bang on! I could not recommend him more highly - we had three novices among us (and a lady) and he couldn't have been more helpful and supportive - check out his website (WWW.PREDATORCHARTERS.CO.UK) and give him a call - you won't go wrong.
