Hi just wondering what rigs people used for winter cod?
Just iv been using pulley single hook or pennel rigs. Because I thought it was the best for the marks i fish.
Iv been reading through some threads and some people are saying they loose fish off the pulley design so have swapped to clipped down(I assume it's paternoster) and say it works better and dont loose fish with them.
Has anyone else had this problem. Or does anyone have an opinion which 1 fishes better and why?
Coz iv just made up a load of pulley rigs and now I'm worried if i use them i mite loose a big cod, thanks in advance micky

Can’t speak for others Micky but I use a single hook pulley or Pennel for fishing at distance and a two hook flapper if I’m closer in. The only time I’ve lost a decent fish, I was fishing with family guy (Gary) and I was fishing a two hook flapper. To lessen the chance of losing a fish make sure your hooks are razor sharp and either sharpen or change them regularly.

I just make my own up now Micky. I bought a couple to see how they were made up then made my own version. I’ve tried circle hooks but I like the Kamasan B940 as I tend to use worm baits a lot. Listen to me, I nearly sound like I know what I’m talking about. Seriously just make up a few different rigs and experiment. If you can fish with two rods, try a different rig on each rod. Different hook sizes/baits etc.

Haha you sure do mate, wey atleast ye know enough to teach me a thing or two mate and the advice is appreciated mate. I'm still only using 1 rod at the minute guy coz its enough for me at the minute. Once I get a bit quicker at everything il think about my next rod mate, I definitly want 2 somewhere down the line mate.

It's about the only rigs I use now pulley un-clipped+rotten bottom for the really heavy ground if I need a bit more distance clipped down
Beach work pulley clipped down or my favourite the up & over clipped down don't really bother now with flappers tend to favour the wishbone incorporated into one of the above rigs still fishing 2 baits or if there's bigger stuff about they tend to take both
Hooks I like varivas big mouth & xtra. mustad ringed chinu for the pennell

I was talking to another bloke on here and he recommended a similar set up for the pennel rigs, it was the mustad chinu but with the sakuma manta 545, I've been told the sakuma manta and the varivas are the same hook, just like how the renault traffic and the Vauxhall vivaro are the same van just a different badge mate, anyways I've since started using that setup and I like the look of it but can't really give an opinion yet coz all the cod f****d off before I got to test it out lol have to wait till next winter for that 1 pall or a different species..
I preffer the chinu to a circle, just going off looks like coz it doesn't fold over itself as much if you know what I mean.
Them cox and rawle meat hooks look the business aswell like mate

There's no need to wait until next winter to try that set-up out use the same for our next trip especially the up & over this will give you a nice compact rig but with longer snoods

If got the cox a rawle size 4/0 and some 6/0 (to go with the wire trace). But I can make some up and over rigs with that pennel setup can I just use 80lb mono for the rig and snood on that setup mate? Jacky has mannaged to get not this saturday but next frèe to hit balcary mate i can't wait me hope the weather stays good like :thumbsup:

you got your rigs/methods mixed up!

Pulley rigs either flapping or clipped down(What ever bit you like at weight? splashdown/imp/Genie bait clip/Breakaway types?)
Pennel is just two hooks in tandem many use a circle ish hook at top works well if attacked from top of bait esp if a large bait.
Flapper is just that flapping in the wind/non clipped down ok for short range but can spin baits around.
What you can do with pulleys is have a bead other side them use either silicone stop knots/mono tied as stop knot so makes rig work more rigid so only slides once put a lot of pressure on it with fish etc
Paternoser can be with all sorts like up and over or swivel at top running down to weight.

i make up and over dropper rigs going to a wishbone but they can be pennel rigged

One of the best is have a net search on rigs as so many out there to choose from and often a different type will give rewards!
