hi

I have been using my carp big pit reels for sea fishing and it has been awsome. but i want to put some braid on it so i can get that extra distance and fish light (target species would be flatties). my question is can i load the reel half way with 12lb mono then the other half with 12lb braid (use the mono as backing??). so the spool 'feel' shallower when the braid starts? i will be using tapered shock leader aswel..

so like 100m mono + 200m braid + tapered shock leader + two hook flapper + 3 or 4 oz lead.

technically it will never hit the mono (casting that far). or that is just disaster written all over it. please advise.

thank you

Yes you certainly can, you can also do it the other way round too. Many of my outfits have lots of mono backing (normally heavier than the braid) but for game like marlin etc I use 500m of braid with as much mono as I can on top. The mono on top gives more stretch when the bigger fish get closer to the boat.

On the 4000 sized reels I use enough mono (25lb in this case) to give a layer then add 270-300m of braid on top (exactly how much depends on the thickness of the braid).

On the last remaining 4000 spool I intend to add 1/3 mono then add 150m of 0.1 (~13lb) braid, leaving the rest of the spool empty.

Depending on purpose I use shock, mono or flurocarbon on the front as a leader - shock for beach/larger boat, then mono, or simply just put fluro direct onto the braid for boat use where I'm not casting for bass etc.

Yes that'll be fine, remember you need some extra braid in case you hook something that takes line like a hound. Instead of using a tapered leader I'd use a braid one, 40lb probably, you're much less likely to get ring wrap.

The thicker the nylon , the more it will eventually bed down , this goes with backing or main line, if you use it as backing buy cheapo .3 stuff and wind it on tight

Hi, You don't say what big pit reel you have, but the Shimano do have optional plastic spool reducers for braid.
