The Yellow Fin Tuna bite that had been very strong in May returned again in the second half of June. Honeymooner Eddie had a fantastic day catching 5 Tuna up to 66lb and his first ever Sailfish. There were 80-100lb Tuna landed by other boats in the fleet and a 140-150lb Tuna lost at the gaff late June. One boat landed a 300lb Blue Marlin and 10 Yellow Fin's in a session late June - a day that will not be forgotton for a while! May was very quiet for Sailfish so it was good to see them return in June where we caught Sailfish on our 3 final trips of the month incuding double hookups and 3-4 fish in the spread at the sime time on multiple occasions. Not really enough Sails about to Fly fish for them (We'll save that for Dec-April) but nice that we are catching them most trips.
The weed/trash lines started building due to the increased afternoon rains and we seen more Mahi in June than we have all year and we expect the numbers to continue to increase in July/August.
Roosterfish & some really nice Snook continue to be caught inshore with Snappers, Groupers, Jacks, Mackerel and a few Tripletails & Corvinas (Sea Bass) also. One boat landed 4 Roosters in one session late June and another boat 3 Roosters another day. We have 6 main Rivermouths that we can fish within easy reach of Quepos and the Parrita Rivermouth has fished exceptionally this year with the Quepos, Naranjo, Savegre and Baru (Dominical) Rivermouths all producting good days also.
We got a real treat on our final charter of the month when we seen our first Humpback Whales of the season. We encountered a mother and a calf in the morning and then another mother and calf in the afternoon. The Tuna ran a mile when the Whales turned up but really stunning to see and we look forward to more sightings in July & August.
The big Sportfishing boats have been killing it 100+ miles offshore at the Marlin FADs with some incredible catch numbers being reported. Double digit Blue Marlin catches on most trips with a few Sails and Striped Marlin also. These guys do 1-3 night live-a-board trips to what is possibility the best Marlin fishing on the planet. Time to save for a bigger boat (my 31' wont quite cut it out there!)
Already looking forward to see what July has in store!
