Hi, can anyone recommend a good reel to make a balanced outfit with a kenzaki 20/30lb please?
Budget is under £100 and pref one without the annoying clicker(though most boat reels ive come across have these)
Will be used for general wrecking for Cod/Ling etc but not for anchoring for eels.

Many thanks in advance

I am planning to buy the Kenzaki 20-30lb to use for general boat and light wrecking (redgills and jellies) with 30lb braid and I chose this reel the new Abu Overhead GT325.

It's a graphite body, but almost bombproof. There are 2 models but the GT335 is really big and weighs 26oz and is more for heavy wrecking, I think. Mine holds around 300 yds of 25lb mono so will easily accomodate 300 of braid with backing. It's an Abu (a major plus point) and only £50 if you shop around (another big plus point).

It does have a ratchet, that can be switched off, and the drive re-engages with one revolution of the handle, which many boat reels don't do. The big fat handle feels great when winding and you can really put some grunt into it.

The market is full of reels of that spec for under £100 but I looked into it a bit and spoke to some tackle dealers and decided on this. Hope it helps.

I dont know too much about gear, but i do have the kenzaki 20-30, and use either a slosh 30 or a shimano charter special with it, both with 30lb braid. The slosh 30 is superb, but without a line winder which is slightly annoying at times. the charter special seems like a super reel too. perhaps it would be nicer to have a faster retrieve sometimes, but they're both well balanced on that rod. hth :)

I'd suggest a SLOSH 30 within that budget as the 6:1 retrieve is deffo an advantage when gilling and it will be balanced nicely to the rod. If you casn stretch the budget the next step up is the saltist - basically a bling SLOSH - but it has a lovely drag and it's built like a tank.

Also built like a tank is the good old Shimano TLD 15, they have been making them for years and there is a good reason why. Effectively this is one size up from the charter special but with no level wind.

Have a look at the Rokmax website, they have got some good prices on the Avet range of reels from the US. Whilst they are a little above your target price they are lovely reels. The SX only weighs 15 oz and is perfect for a Kenzaki 12/20. Despite being tiny it still has 9lb of drag which is more than enough for most UK fish. Lovely to have such a light reel when holding rod and reel all day. I've also got an Accurate 270, whilst this is a better reel it is way, way, more expensive. For the price I think the SX compares very favourably.

Next size up, the MXJ, is a bit more expensive at £116 but would be perfect for your purpose. It still only weights 18oz, has capacity for 300yds of 20lb mono (so LOADS of braid). 14lb of drag. MXL has a little bit more line capacity for a few quid more. Pedro has one of thes and loves it - he may be along soon to comment?.

But Paul, with an ultra fast reel you can choose to wind up VERY fast or VERY Slow.

(said whilst passing Paul his coat)
I think your winding up is a bit like Terrys boat......................flat out or stop? Wonder how fast your tailgate fitting is though? ;)

Sorry to go off topic guys, going to walk the dog now...honest!

Have a look at Penn GTO and Gt2 models which will suit your budget too. However my original recommendation of the Abu Overhead GT325 still stands and you can get braid and some terminal tackle with the remaining £50!

I've got a Penn GT220.....capable reel but bulky.....the postman just handed me a new SLOSH30 which cost just £75 delivered so would leave 25 quid of the OP's budget for some nice braid.
I went wrecking recently out of Pwllheli using a borrowed Mitchell 724 (BIG reel!) and it had no levelwind.

Now I am perfectly happy using CT cage reels on the beach and thumbing the line onto the spool. However, using the Mitchell all day convinced me that I wanted a levelwind when I bought my own boat reel.

I compared the GTO220 when I bought my new Abu and am convinced I made the right choice.

My vote goes for slosh 30 if you don't need a levelwind - fast, cheap, reliable and with a lovely drag. Plenty of room for 3-400yds 40lb braid and backing. Alderneyangling's the place to buy from. The only disadvantage is that big fish will probably reduce you to pumping due to the high gear ratio.

Thank you all for your replies and recommendations. Has really helped make my mind up. I have decided that i am going to go for a SL05H 30 mainly due to the overall good reviews and the budget i am on. I looked at the Avets and Saltists and yes they look lovely reels and maybe one day i will own one but for £62.99 that is too good a price to turn down. Thats £30+ on braid and leads and am ready to go;)
Swifty that abu looks nice but i am not a levelwind fan but thanks again for your reply and cheers Toerag for the website suggestion:))

Cheers
