I am about to get my trusty old rods out and have a bash back shore Fishing. Last time the best reels were the American Penns and the Swedish ABUs. What's the go to reels now for shore casting. I heard the Penns and ABUs were not as good anymore?

Get a US Penn 525 Mag, hard to find but worth it if you can find them.
