Hi, I fish with one rod. Was thinking of getting a larger tripod but do you have any experience of the single rod holders/rests? The ones that push about a foot into the ground?

Thanks

Sand spikes are good especially for big baits and fish such as hounds and bass with the reel drag loosened, you can wiggle them in to most shingle beaches but sometimes need a large stone in front of the rodrest if the shingle is small/loose.
If i have a livebait out the rod goes in a sand spike !

Hi,

I use a tripod for two rods angling and a sand spike for one rod angling.

The sand spike only whilst unhooking the fish and baiting up, or during coffee break and sarnie.

In between I hold the rod in hands, well most of the time that is.

Tight lines, lambert63.

I use a tripod for all my fishing, but welding for a living made myself a top and bottom fitting for my tripod from stainless steel to hold just a single rod replacing the double head and double butt cups.
If the double sets whih come with the tripod are made with a flat bar that screws into the rest, you could always drill another hole through it so when you attach it to the rest one of the sets of holders is closer to the centre line of the rest ie the back leg??

Most tripods have single rod cup sets available from the net,and quite cheaply too..... personally, I find it easy enough to adapt a double to a single cup rest wihout resorting to actually buying anything, a half hour in he workshop covers it.

Sand spikes, great for mobility, not really seen many anglers using them for a few years up here in Yorkshire, I use mine when beach wandering, and they are good when beach bassing, I hold the rod when fishing, and use the spike when baiting up.

No good on concrete:laugh:
Joking aside I built a double sandspike back in the 80's using heavy gauge aluminium angle and stainless bolts I used this for fishing with a pair of old Cod 6's which were heavy rods and never had it go over on me even in strong winds and fast tides.I still use it today if I want to travel light and roam around but if you wan't to use bait hangers for double patting then stick with a tripod with a single cup.
Cheers
