just thought id show this. its out of a abu 6500 that belongs to a guy i know. his reel was running slow/rough so he took it to a local shop for a service. he picked it up a few days later supposedly all cleaned and serviced. however when he tried it it seemed no better. i offered to look and this is what i found when i took the guard off the bearing to see what it was like inside. both spool bearings where the same. its absolutely disgusting some one will do that to a customer. oh and don't worry i told him it should never have got that bad in the first place lol.

If you just remeove the spool cant you see the bearing straight away. I would have thought that back to te shop and ask the question. what did you do... then ask them to do the basic strip in front of you and embaress them... Shows you are better off having a look yourself or by a good word of mouth repairer.

Before (in case) anyone asks.....please do not "name and shame". See the rules if you want to know why. Even if they deserve it!

i told him to take it back in but he wont just wanted it sorted and back ready to use. yes you can see the bearing but not the inside of it with out taking the guard off. that pic is inside the bearing. i normally don't open the bearings as i don't see the need to but curiosity got the better of me and i had to have a look.

 Nothing a squirt of WD 40 and a drop of PTFE oil won't cure.
WD40?? If you're looking to build up a coat of varnish then yes, personally I use lighter fluid or brake cleaner followed by a blast from some canned air to dry and blow out any remaining dirt.
Then either inox or rocket fuel, depending on requirement

I flush my bearings with lighter fluid then clean the pot flush it out again leave to dry on some kitchen roll or a rag then I add a couple of drops of oil dab the excess off once it's soaked in

I find leaving the bottle of oil on the radiator for five mins helps it to soak right into the bearings

That's got to be the worst bearing I have seen there's no cleaning them up get a new set :D

yep blakdog is very good bought stuff from him a few times. the bearings were replaced for the sake of £2.50 each for stainless one's (from swan bearings only 5mins from my house) it was not worth trying to sort them out i just binned them. same as most folk i go with lighter fluid to clean and a drop of rocket fuel.

i was using 3 in 1 oil i tried the yellow rocket fuel for bearings & rocket fuel liquid greese for gears last night and the reels run so much faster and smoother with the 3 in 1 oil in the bearings

I agree about getting new bearings. What is left of those will be pitted and would scream their heads off even if you could get them clean. WD40 is not a great thing near fishing reels as it can lift chrome coatings which is not exactly helpful.

sorry to hear about yer mate's misfortune and hope you get sorted. regarding the couple of quid bearings though, you didn't really need to take the shields off to see they were goosed. I think changing the bearings in a 6500 is probably easier than tying a rig and can't understand what a 'reel service' is actually supposed to be, a reel repair, yes. other that that it's a clean down and drop of oil.
