Hi, I am new to this forum but have been spending the last couple of weeks looking through and been very impressed by the knowledge of everyone and hope you may be able to help me.

I had a rod and reel combo brought for me around 8 years ago as a present and have slowly been catching the fishing bug.

Now I have decided to buy myself a rod that I can use for a couple of years as I try to improve my fishing.

I have been looking at not spending more than around £100 if possible so I don't mind upgrading the rod in a couple of years if I really get into it.

I am open to a new or second hand rod and so far using this forum for guidance have been drawn towards either:

The Penn Powerstix Pro Surf 13" 4-6oz, Daiwa Supercast 13" 4-8oz, Shakespeare Salt (not sure on length or weight range) or a Sonik SK3 13" 4-6oz I was thinking about a fixed Spool version as I have been given a Penn Surfmaster 850 reel which I will use with it.

As I am buying a new rod which I hope to use for a couple of years would I be better off getting a multiplier Rod and a Multiplier for £50 new or second hand if that would enable me to get a better reel.

Never fished with a multiplier before though.

I fish in Norfolk and Suffolk if that will make any difference in rod choice.

Any help or further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Ed.

Cheers for getting back to me John,

Is the Supercast worth double the Salt as the price suggests?
I am now thinking about staying FS for a couple of years and getting to grips with a new rod before being brave enough to try a multiplier after talking to a few people this evening as I dont think it will improve my distance greatly.

Many thanks.

Reel wise you'll find the majority of people that chuck it a long way use multi's, but there are people that stick with fixed spool that go just as far. Conclusion? Go with what you're comfortable with, there's very little between fixed spool and multi's these days.

Rod wise I've not used the Salt but you generally get what you pay for and the Supercast is a good rod. I've brought cheapish stuff in the past and regretted it, having to upgrade because it just didn't cut the mustard. The Supercast isn't the very best you can buy, but it'll cope with anything you'll come across around here and will cast further than most people are capable of...no brainer really!

well said guys, must admit i used to use fixed spool, biomasters for years, now use multis abu, slosh, penn 525,there
is no difference to my distance multis just feel so good when there is a nice fish on the end its up to you supercast and fixed spool, but word of warning i have heard that the penn fixed spool are not good all the best john

Hi, if i were you i would be little more specific on what ground you want the rod for,the majority of anglers on this forum own more than one rod as they fish more than one venue,a beach either side of a groyne can be totally different so you may need to review what your looking at,the penn 750/850 reels are pants this why the dealers are throwing them at the public in combos so my advice would be to trade it in if you want further proof key in penn 750/850 in the seach menu,if your going F/S for beachwork try to aim for one of the shimanos 6000 or upwards.I have used fixed spool on multiplier rods without problems so if you are looking to upgrade to a multiplier at a later date it may pay to expand your search, having said that replying to your first question i have used a shaky salt {older model} for general beach work and for the price i couldn`t fault it,albeit i cannot comment on the others, although i use a pair of sonik 4`s i can`t comment on the 3 series,i see you been looking through previous posts and threads, might well be worth another look you might get some ideas from those, regards Alan=[Radio Rental]

Thanks for your comments and for throwing another potential rod into the mix. AFAW is a new one on me not heard of them before. :bangin:

I have found today a couple of very good prices on the Shakespeare Salt rods. 1 is the Shakespeare Salt Extreme 1292 Surf for £62.06 delivered the other is the Shakespeare Salt beach rod 12ft 9" FS for £56.99.

Both seem very good prices but i am struggling to find the difference between the two rods and am hoping someone maybe able to shed some light on that and some more opinions on the AFAW would be great.

The beaches i would say our way are fairly clean with no rocks if that helps at all.

Cheers for all the help.

here i go again!! the anyfish anywere rods are excellent imo, my son in law uses the 13 ft 6+ bait F/S,if you bought one of these you probably wouldn`t want to upgrade it,have a look in the WSF shop they are doing good deals on them at the mo,hope this helps, regards Alan=[Radio Rental]

Shakespeare Salt are excellent for the money, cheap because old stock not because of quality...think they were just shy of £100 when they first came out. I'm sure the supercast is good too...so whatever catches your fancy.

Multis....often multi users do chuck a long way, but it's probably more to do with beguinners avoiding them than anything about the reel itself.

I like using multis, I don't like using the big beach FS - but I don't think there's a difference in terms of distance etc nowadays.

A multiplier with mags is user friendly, if you keep your cast smooth and start on max mags you'll be fine. Most of the multiplier horror stories are from old farts with creaky knees like me who remember Mitchell 602s and Seastreaks and a hideous tangles.

Used to fish Norfolk/Suffolk beaches all the time(about 50yrs) till I moved up to Scotland. Started using 14/15 ft Continental type rods with fixed spool found these gave me good distance without fancy casting. What beaches are you fishing? Cod beaches need a good distance cast,75yds plus min. Clipped down rigs, either pennel or 2down and big lug baits. Summer Bass short casts into good surf does the trick.
