Hello,

Has anyone ever used fresh sardine for bait and if so how effective have you found it? I know it is one of the most effective bass bait in Portugal, but wondered if it was any good here. Travel down from London to fish a lot, but sometimes struggle to get fresh bait from tackle shops. I can pretty much always get hold of mackerel and hering from the supermarkets but never catch anything on these baits. Squid has been very succesful however.

Any advice or anecdotal evidence would be gladly received.

Cheers,

sardines should be as good as any other fresh fish used as bait. fresh mackeral is a good bait on most beaches at anytime of the year.

have you tried ringing tackel shops before you leave home to secure fresh lug or rag baites?if you want to use fresh fish as bait why not try getting it from billingsgate fish market.....most supermarket fish is nearly frozen by the time they get it and so it is not really fresh..
