Been watching this little window in the weather more keenly than a double glazing salesman !
About Saturday tea I dropped into the conversation ' Monday evening looks like the only fishable weather for about a fortnight'.
Really dear,you don't normally go on a Monday'! Ah..............that's not a no!
So a quick dive into Prime for a couple of wraps of their finest black and home early enough from non federation business to get to the beach by 7. High water a bit after 8pm.
The Domina was a bit under the weather when I got home......mmmm.......So when she said 'I won't be much company tonight, you might as well go' did I a) say no worries love I'll make you a nice cup of tea or b) Whoooosh ! Yep !.............. Whoosh !
So I pulled up by the flats, conditions were challenging, not as challenging as posting a thread on Conservation and Politics on this forum and it's far easier to get a result on the beach! Oh, you haven't looked.................
Anyway back to the fishing, big waves chasing you well up the beach. The wind hadn't gone round like the forecast said and a stiff westerly was pushing 3 white lines diagonally towards the beach. Safely negotiated the 8 foot sheer drop to a line of weed at the high tide mark, not looking good.
Set up a 3 hook flapper size 2s on the Rampage and gave it large. Lug n squid on 2 hooks and pellet mark 3 in the middle. Initially I wanted to see if I could get past the back tow and hold bottom and rustle up a bite or two.
Now with the beach having shallowed up so much it is tricky to get your line up out of the rollers and the tip was bouncing all over the place, first 3 chucks, were they knocks, squid tip and a pellet missing.
4th chuck, now that was a bite..........and another. Hussah ! 2 tings, of modest proportion I admit, broke the blank . Followed that next chuck with a Colin....
some say aaahhhhhhhhh...some say arghhhhhhhhhh !
…............. so clipped up a 3/0 single hook rig on the other rod and out she went Black and squid head. It was too rough to fish 2 rods especially with the odd rogue lump of weed pirouetting the rod round in the rest so at 7.30 I stood down the scratching rig and prepared to fish the big bait the hour up and down. Up to high tide the waves got bigger and the baits came back untouched, on the turn it flattened off just a little and the knocks came back and 5 more tings greedily hooked up on the big bait.
Greedy little sucker !!!
The last one tied the rig up in knots as it spun through the surf so a quick punt with the scratching rig to use up the last of the worms resulted in 2 more of their brethren. Packed up just after 10pm, some quality shingle time, ten fish in tricky conditions, brilliant. Pellets flew well but no hook ups
Somehow negotiated the 8 foot crumbling shingle cliff and got back to the car with sweat pouring out of every orifice but a happy bunny. That drop is intimidating so beware, bigger tides might also pin you back against it so move early.
2 other lunatics were west of me, they may have been Irregulars (non posting division), time will tell.
Fantastic to post a catch report...tight lines brethren
