I have decieded to be sensible, I am going to buy a slosh or a penn second hand and also try and get an ABU 7000 as well, that way I can have a rough ground in close reel and a reel without levelwind that can get out a bit further.

Advice wanted ,

Is there any second hand reel dealers out there, I have seen that reel doctor, does he sell second hand?, I wonder if anyone knows of them on the internet?

Do veals etc sell used tackle?

I am sure there would be a market, e bay is an option I suppose.

As Big fish Said The Reel Doc (Alias Nigel) is the man to speak to, I believe he specialises in ABU's but could well have others for sale.

Nigel is well known on other forums and I have never seen a bad word said about him. In fact you only ever see high praise. I believe all the reels he sells are reconditioned and in top notch.

Be very careful about buying 2nd hand if you aren't sure about what you are doing or who you are buying from. The difference between decent reels and cheap ones is all down to good engineering and a 2nd hand knackered reel is not worth anything.

You mention you are after "a Penn or Slosh and an ABU". You also mention "I can have a rough ground in close reel and a reel without levelwind that can get out a bit further".

On that basis it seems like you are going for the ABU as your rough ground reel with the Penn or Slosh as a out and out casting reels.

You haven't mentioned what Penn or Slosh you are after IE Penn 525gs, 525 mag, 525 supermag, 535gs or 535 mag. In the Slosh range you have the 20, 30 or even 40.

Both the Penn and the Sloshes are fantastic rough ground reels and can cast very well. They also have a far higher retrieve ratio (6-1) than the ABU. Don't get me wrong I am not slagging of ABU but for rough ground the Penn 535 or Slosh 30's get very good right ups on forums.

I originally went for 2 525 GS's with 18lb line as beach reels but I do a lot of rock fishing, so I eventually bought a Slosh 30 an put on 30lb line. Both reels are great but you do not have to stick to just one discipline with them. So I now have 25lb line on one of my GS's and I can use that for beach or rocks.

I also use all of my reels as boat reels when the mood takes me and I am "sport" fishing. Both the Penn 535 or Slosh 30 with 30lb line will bring up almost anything we will catch in the UK apart from large Skate or Porbeagle.

As I said you haven't mentioned MAG's. I am not into "Mega" casting but I can get baits out 120 yards when needed. In my opinion Mag breaking doesn't actually add anything directly to the cast but gives you added control and through this added confidence, so maybe this can add distance. But a good reel in good condition that you can control is the way to go.

If I was starting out again and could only buy one reel for beach, rock and boat it would be either the Penn 535 Gs's or Slosh 30's loaded with 25lb line.

I have a two Penn 525 mags and a Slosh 30. I've also owned a 535 gs. Out of the lot my favourite is the Slosh. The mags are good but i fouund the 535 gs to be ****. It broke twice whilst i owned it and just wasn't as nice to use.
Just my opinion though. :)
