I'm never really sure how much to use or how to set it up for the correct level.

I'm using 30lb PP so only give it a couple of turns so I can just about pull line from the reel with my hand.

Oh and I'm using a sort of mediumish rod (cheapo Abu Diamond Crest) rated 20-60g if that makes any difference?

Although rated 20+ it seems fine casting 10g lures.

For what you are doing your drag should be set at about 3lb or a few ounces less.

It should give line easily to even a relatively small fish if it set's off on a run, otherwise you run the risk of pulling hooks.
It won't need to be any tighter (or only a fraction) on even the biggest Bass you are likely to encounter on your travels.

Been using much too much then, cheers.

Whats the best way to set to about 3lb though? Get a 3lb weight and attach to swivel then lift the rod so it just about lets line off?

That will be perfect.
3lb is still a lot and more than enough to stop much bigger fish (eventually).
With practise, you can go lighter, but you shouldn't get hook pulls at that sort of level.
