Well first two days here in shetland with the boys and it's been some battle , with storms and battering haylstones and along with mad sun spells in between lol .
Fished a local mark from digs and what a place . ( all catch and release ) and believe me your greeted and checked upon by the locals at any giving time. Great folk full of help and advice but they make it clear killing the fish wont be tolerated as it's not what they do around the area . ( which is fine by us it's not about then cod for the pot here ) .

Arrived yesterday as we had to get the ferry the day before we were booked as we were called to say our one due to storms wasnt sailing. So in a mad rush we managed to get our things and catch it .

First started fishing the mark at around 10 am yesterday and my mate Andy after an hour or so landed a whopping 19lb cod few hours after that after me dropping two my mate nick had 2 at 17.6 lb & 15 lb cod , I was missing them left right and centre and the once I did have rushing and either snapping my trace or pulling them right out their mouth , Andy also landed another 12lb cod shortly after nick which I forgot to add in .

Then Just before pack up last night my one came and my oh my I was amazed. Personal best by a long shot at 24lb cod , ended the night on cloud 9 .

Today we went out around some different marks but the weather was torrential so we opted to go buy some pop ups and head back to the same mark .
Very wet day with manic showers , plenty bites but nothing locking on until high tide when I landed another whopper at 18.7lb ( cod ).
Shortly after Andy landed a 2lb coal fish .

Headed home at 11pm and will get ready to rock tomorrow again .

Will keep yous posted on the next few days fishing.
And we may not get off the island as theirs another storm Monday but that wont bother me ha ha .

(Just to point out we have been catching flattys in between the days fishing just out in the main inlet over the road on break intervals from the cod fishing .Their has been that many i cant mind the ins and outs of what the times of day they were at).

All cod returned back safely.

Bait used squid , bluey , cart cubes, mackerel we are all using different with same to similar results .

Cheers gaz.

Cracking fish mate well done.

Now generally speaking I'm a very mellow laid back kinda guy but I would be sticking a rod rest up the nose of any local trying to tell me that I couldn't keep a fish if I wanted to. Especially as (apart from minimum size) there are no legal restrictions on the catching of cod.!

PS. Does the Mrs know you've nicked the food recycling bin to use as a bait bucket.?

According to an old man in a cottage on the hill you would not want to eat them anyway as the Ceptic tanks from all the propertys waste all run through the inlet point and the place stinks to the high heavens in hotter months . he said many years he was giving one and it was **** soft meat almost like jelly.

Never the less I dont see the point in killing fish that size just makes no sense to me the bigger ones are normally the least tasteful .

And it's nice to keep it tradition it's been done for years why be the one to break that habit .

Plenty cod out on the main sea for the pot no need to go upsetting the locals by killing thier pets .

Apparently 7 years ago some folk wiped it out and it took 7 years to get back to the way it is ( so cant be residents .
According to many locals they come in and out every year to feed before spawning or to spawn couple folk say differing things.

But according to a man that's lived their all his life youd have to be a nut job to eat them , many years ago he was giving a fish ( cod from their )and it was yellow and like jelly nothing like a sea cod white thick meat .
Also the whole side of that sea inlet the houses have sceptic tanks ext and that loch stinks from the high heavens in summer can be smelt for miles .
Also when the sea is running in a certain way it's all forced into the loch.( dont see why the old guy would lie ).

And if their are cod in it in summer and they were residents in such a small place how on earth do they not get Hooked in summer as its fished for all sorts all year round . ( again according to two lads that's fished it for years this is the case ).

I've studied it and took time to view the inlet and walked round many times and I believe they come in fresh as juveniles ( but I thinkn bigger ones cant get out) just my personal opinion tho as they come in to feed on the coal fish . But again I'm told they come in and out yearly .

Never the less we went for PBs not food so quite happy to put them back the trip wasnt about bringing fish back home.

Now I'm not for one second doubting you mate but I'm struggling with what the old boy was telling you about sewage discharge. Septic tanks get emptied by trucks (at least mine does in Argyll) also you would think it would have an equally unappealing effect on the flesh of all the other species of fish in there.

If you dont think it's the seals that is the issue dive up and take a look for yourself..

We counted 60 odd in one bay only on one wee bit if grass . The place is plagued with them.

Speak with the guy on ferry crossing to yell he has been a shore Fisher all his life and cant even fish his spots as the place is clogged with them .

When you go do what I've just done and ferrie it from island to island and walk and fish all sorts and see the seals I've seen you may change your mind or you may not ..

Logic ... seals eat fish ....lots of them .... theirs are no fish..... but seals have trebled in recent years and all they do is lie in the thousands on the rocks ,grass verges and bays

You do the maths ..

Cheers bud Garry.

PS ...wondered if anyone has ever landed anything of notable size from nearby loch of Strom ? a similar habitat and ecology on face value, abundant crabs shrimps etc and has a good population of 1/2lb coalies, flooks, cod and anything else that's get sooked in by the powerful tidal run there. but ive only ever seen/heard of small stuff come out it apart from the odd decent seatrout. Have heard anecdotal evidence from old timers that there was a 'run' of cod to that location many decades ago. Just out curiosity and nostalgia - not intending to hijack this thread or cause any arguments!

Which is why no one eats any off of it ..

And yes I'm aware of sceptic tanks getting emptied by truck I do live out in the countryside .

Their are shite pipes all around the edges sort of half cemented in coming into the place which I've seen for Myself but again the guys on the forum will know more than the locals they always do.:BigGrin::BigGrin:

Again I only repeated what we were told and the thought of it is enough to put me off . Plus the fact I'd like to keep folk on my side for future why break a habit when if your that desperate to eat one you can just go buy one .

Maybe you can dive up and test it on the plate for us all bud braver you are than me .:rofl:

Stick in bud cheers Garry

With having to eat minimum of 3-4 percent of their body weight and up to 10 daily then that's enough to tell you where the fish are going bud .

They need controlled now if it was birds of prey doing that to other bird species etc their would be a massive hoo ha made of it as its fish no one seems to care .

Probably cause all the halfwits in these jobs nowadays are all sad ass vegans :rofl::rofl:.

The fishermen want them to feed on a nice bit of lead.
