Hi all

Have been reading somewhere on this forum how popular the Speedmaster is/was.

I recalled having one and have now identified it amongst a number of my other reels.( It has the reel seat that allows for a bracket to be screwed around the rod butt, what's all that about)
I brought it probably 15-17 yrs ago for uptiding and used it once, may be twice at most. It is still in pristine new condition kept indoors and never having been taken apart, oiled or fiddled with.

Please remind me is it primarily a light or heavy beach reel or a was it produced for uptiding when that type of fishing first became popular ?

I was wondering if I stuck some line on would it really hold it's own on the beach against the modern 6500's or 7 HTs.

If I were to offer to swap for an upto date distance beach reel what should I be looking for in return ?

Thanks for any advice.

The guys are right. They are superb reels(I've got 8 of them!!!). Cast miles and are almost bullet proof.

I've heard of spools exploding but mine have been used over the roughest ground and hauled an 18lb ling up from a wreck on a 6-12lb class boat rod with no worries.

It seems as though you've got the TSM IIfs...which is the model without centrifugal brakes..as opposed to the IIcfs..which had brakes("c" being for "centrifugal").

This is going to be way too fast for casting unless as advised earlier you get a mag brake fitted. Only thing is you'll lose the ratchet.

Matt
Martin Larkins used this reel to land the british record shore caught conger of 68lbs so i would say definately a superb reel capable of doing what is was meant for, fishing

There is also the possibility of low cost magging, i think smoothhound54 posted the way to do it.

I did it on all my tsm fs with 6mm diametre magnets, and in the heights of 4, 3, 2.5 and 2mm.
To be honest, i hadn`t expected the magnetic strenght of modern neodyms (N42 or something), so that for normal head winds i never needed more than 2 x 2mm of the N42s and i bought some N35 magnets in 2mm later for low wind situations.

But, Ratched still in and magnetic breaking , too.
Costs me for 3 Tsm Fs`s about 4€ and 2 hours of work.

Hi if it's a C version at drive end of spool is where blocks hang out 2 pins for them unscrew ratchet end push side off by pushing spool to side take spool out and you'll see them.
Clean brake rim plus check it as many come unbonded so when braking can move round if so use some araldite type gear to repair happens on many but most never notice and wonder why very lairy!
Pretty easy to do yourself Blakdogs kit explain just get it all ready measure up then have a cup of tea then check again to make sure (tea always focuses the mind!) side plate is plastic so no bull in China shop attack small hole then make bigger! If have tools can make adjustments with drill/tool if not quite right if slightly to big not to worry as collar has hex side inside plate so won't come through along with sleeve on outside you can even use a washer under it if that bad.
You want mag as close as poss to spool when turned in so that bit takes a while to adjust so don't turn grub screw up tight till right but fitting and adjusting 10th mins

Blakdog will know fishing one right size other is field more but you can always turn mag out if too powerful but can't turn mag up if it's not strong enough!
But makes sure slight end float on spool when finished plus drop of oil base of drag stack bush as that's it's weak point as bush not ball bearing

Shocking reels everything looks good including casting, try winding in anything and that's where the problems start, the spools are so flimsy they just explode under pressure and can take the side plate out too (slosh 20s do the same but to a lesser degree!). I had one of these reels when they first came out and went through 2 spools in quick succession. Don't think it was a bad batch as I've heard it happening to lots of people. Might be ok if your plopping but winding in from long range the pressure builds especially with moderate weight fish say a dog or 2lb codling.

I have 2 speedmasters but now use fathoms maged by blackdog which is fantastic . But now and then i will get the speedmasters out and both got blackdog mags on them they such great reels to use once maged . Run sweat as a nut cant fault em just a great shame shimano stoped making em

don't know about him but imo,the penn fathom 12 or 15 take some beating for the money, just replace the blocks with abu fibre one's or mono mag it add some decent inboard spool bearings and you have one of the finest casting and fishing reels you can buy

iv got speedmasters used them ,,ooo god since they came out,,,, but now the fathoms have taken there place , but i still use my speedmaster i just love em ok i admit they gone past there sell by date , no other reel in my mind is as good as them , but what with no spairs for them iv gone over to fathoms and iv had em blackdog maged and you just cant fualt them, perfect reels , so go for a fathom get them maged and change the bearings complete , and you end up with a perfect reel

I'll pay postage and you can send me the ones you don't want
Can get as much out of my speedmasters as I can out of my 7ht mags, saltists, and penn mags and they are 20 years old
What's shimano bought out in last 5 years that is affordable for most folk ?
Is it my fault you don't earn enough. So advising people to buy a second hand mediocre reel from the 1990's that you have to send away to be magged, cant get parts for unless you buy some one else's second hand junk, and will fall apart if you hammer it makes sense does it?
The only reels that are still here are those that have been hardly used, like yours.
Like I said, waste of money.

Not only are you an expert on reels your an expert on my financial situation and my fishing habits
Your forum name is quite apt

As your the guru on here now (there have been many ) what should I buy ?
I fish mixed ground primarily what should I buy that will do what my tsm2cfs and daiwa saltists can't

Nothing to do with being a guru as you put it, its common sense. As Tim says most mass produced reels have problems, but the price people ask for these old reels is ridiculous. I could split my reels and get more for the parts than it would cost to buy a new modern reel. I've had spools, side plates and frames go. At least with a modern reel you can easily be back in business cheaply, not searching the internet looking for over priced parts, or having to buy another complete reel just for a spool etc.

Got to admit I liked the Speedmasters, had four or five over the years, no trouble with them but they were not perfect, in almost every reel there is a flaw, the first Saltists had problems with stripping the threads in the star drag when tightened down (hence why i got Shot of mine), the first American mag 525's were all or nothing on the mag braking and very agricultural (still are), chinese 525/515 doesn't have the close tolerances of previous Penns, hence line trap ! Fathom brake blocks (the one's that come with the reel) wear very quick so need either replacing with fibre blocks or magging, the Greys Gmags lost it's coating on the frames etc and looked like they were dragged behind a car, see where i am coming from ? IMO there is no perfect reel , most have to be modified in some way or another, thank god for people like Blackdog !
I use the Fathoms now (with Abu brake blocks) seem to be the better reel around at the mo, especially for value, also good value are the SL20SH reels(again has documented faults, search 'slosh') but for ÂŁ65 it's a no brainer !
