Has anyone had a problem on the Abu Ambassadeur 6500 C3 Ct Mag Elite reel with a slipping clutch? I stripped mine down about a month ago to clean and oil the reel and generally give it a good service.

Last week I hooked onto a reasonable sized thornback and I noticed that the clutch was constantly slipping when I was reeling in. I had to thumb the spool whilst pumping the rod and take line whilst lowering the rod.

I think I may have gotten a little oil on the clutch mechanism making it slip. I will have to strip it again at the weekend and de-grease the clutch bit. I never had this problem before I stripped the reel down to clean it.

I wonder if it is possible to roughen the clutch up a bit with some fine emery cloth to give it some more grip?

Give it a good clean and a thorough degrease, it'll be fine.
Don't go near it with emery, though. It seems like a good idea, but very probably isn't.
Got that Ailsa Craig running yet ? :wiggle:
Cheers,

no - tried everything, new condenser etc. I think that the coil may be shot. only got a resistance of about 3 ohms across the coil which seems a little low to me. I took the magneto out of the engine and gave it a good clean but when it turns over I am getting a little over 1 volt being generated from the coil. Have sort of given up with it really. dont know what else to do?

a 6500 is a bit small for thornback, a 7000, 7500, would probably be better especially with the cod starting to turn up.

Get the coil rewound.
I'll send you a PM in a couple of minutes or so, with some cotact details for a good rewinder/mag reconditioner.

It may be small bit they are still very powerfull. I have landed a 20lb cod and a 23lb blonde on this reel no problem.

Hey White Lancer…

As you know those drag washers are pre-treated…would suggest a soak in lighter fluid to remove any oil/grease contamination.

Also note the slightly smaller washer that sits under the main cog…this can be swapped for one of the slightly larger ones (same size as the 3 in the main drag assembly)….giving a slightly larger area for the main cog to bite on and a wee bit more crank to drag.

make you right, but as i found out a few years ago the clutch starts slipping (as youve found) then the whole thing seizes just when you get a stonker
hope it doesn't happen to you but i speak from personnal experience

Did not manage to get out this weekend as no towbar on my car so I stripped down my three Abu 6500's and just as I suspected - the three clutch washers were as oily as an oily thing!

After a good clean I replaced everything and now the clutch is working just as it should be on all of them.

Hi White Lancer
I searched for solutions to this problem and tried the degreasing the drag washers to no avail. What baffled me was that the audible click worked fine on free spool in and out. Worked fine on reeling in but I couldn't figure out why it didn't click on drag out under tension in gear. I had also noticed that the slippage was worst just after casting....when the spool filled up again the problem got a bit better.
I then found out why.
It's nothing to do with the gearbox. It's the line spinning on the spool shaft. If you mark the edge of the spool and strip line out with a tight drag you will see that line is given but the spool stays in the same place! I have fished for 45 years and never had this happen. I am using Fireline and will strip the spool, put a base layer of electric tape and reload under tension.
How weird is that!

I use a lot of the 6500 series ABUs and found the best solution to keeping the drag working properly was stripping the reel after every couple of trips and degreasing the washers, but I bought a few spare sets of the carbontex washers so I did not have to wait for the degreasing before re-assembling the reels. I have never had a problem with the line slipping on the spool though as I loop the line over itself before tying it to itself and then pulling tight. I seems to lock it tight to the spool whether using mono or braid. as for using a bigger reel size, have never found it necessary unless in deep fast flowing water. have managed to land cod to over 20lb and conger to 63lb on the 65oo. I mainly use 6-12lb class or 12-30lb class rods.
