here is some thing we were talking about down the pub during the week here is two fish caught about 100 yards apart :roll1:
obviously the sliver one caught over sand
and the black one over rough ground
it seems the rougher the ground the darker the get
now i have caught sliver ones on rough ground
and black on sand but not very often
so what do ya think do bass choose to stay in the same area all the time or can the switch the camouflage on and off like a chameleon:drunk:
any thoughts on this :bye2:

Speculation on my part here too, but I think a lot of the time the colour has a lot to do with the environment they are in, they have very reflective skin. You can see in the photo below how the flanks of the bass is reflecting the colour of the background.

I think the dark ones have often been sunning themselves and generally the warmer they are the darker they are and hence over rock where it's generally shallow they are darker.

I'm not convinced it has anything to do with sunning themselves, more likely the range of colour is just down to blending into their environment. There seems to be a great range of colours in all species of fish depending on their locality

Sometime the ones caught from shallow beaches have a real goldy hue about them, I'm sure the colors change due the environment they are in, happens with lots of species.

The dark ones looks the best IMHO, they look a real fierce predetor then

PS great picture Joe
