hmy: I dragged a smoothound out last night tide very near withernsea , I was acctualy trying to catch a early cod, because an old lad i was talking too told me they can show up here very early on.
I was a bit shocked to be honest, first off i thought they were all gone from this coast by early september. and second i caught it at a place i never thought they frequented. It was about 5lbs.
Now my thoughts.. The cast that produced this hound was a fair cast by my or anyone elses standards, my range is getting out there now.
Based on when i was blanking sesion on sesion, when all those who could cast well were hauling them in by the barow load!
Do the knowledgeable smoothound lads on here think that they are out there just out of casting range, or is this just a one off, i was thinking of trying bohemia or chapel area for a hound if you think there is a chance of still catching one, or do i count my blessings and write it down to experience, and keep looking for the start of the cod?

there,s proberly a chance of a hound or two on any beach this time of yr.. there was a few show along the norfolk coast a wk or so back..
any fish at the minute, would be a bonus going on how the fishing been of late...
it,s nearly 8 wks since i wet a line on the the beach...

8 weeks off Bob i was not much better mate, the geese keep calling and i keep going. i got my fill for a wile now though, untill they build in number, so i will be hitting the shores still but with a rod. Roll on these cod things croping up.

i think there are still odd ones about but not enough to make an effot for them. the reverse of this is i had a 4lb coddling 2nd week of june when out for the hounds at six marshes, but it was too rough for the hounds, mate had a couple of bass as well.

They're still around, but not in numbers. We had a few today north of Withernsea. Something was attracting them, there were porpoises and a seal showing in the same area for a while. Then it all went quiet again, back to normal.

Fished alderborough sat night and im glad to read this thread as we caught a very small hound on squid along with loads of whiting. I thought it was either a hound or a tope but couldnt believe it as i thought they would be well gone now too.....

It was a very calm night indeed, so i guess the clear water could have encouraged them in to feed......

Bring on the codling season, how many of last years will be back at over 5lb????? Had loads of twos and threes last year so hopefully they will be back in numbers this year, a very very exciting prospect indeed!!!!

There were Smoothies being reported caught over the VHF when I was out on the boat on Saturday, a fair few by the sounds of it, up to 15lb, this was a few miles out though, 8-10 miles offshore, so they are still hanging around a bit.

we were fishing the beach though, so was even madder as you can imagine. Nice to hear they are gettting a few out there , just dont think i will manage a 8 mile cast !!!!:hammer:
