It's more complicated than that. Snood length greatly depends on the tide run and the species you're targetting. Fish swim uptide to the bait, pick it up, and then turn and go back downtide, a snood that's too short in a tide run that's too slow can result in a lot of missed bites as the fish doesn't get hooked. A snood that's too long in a slow tide can tangle. Practice and experience will tell you when and where you can use long or short snoods which is why it's better to have pre-tied rigs with different lengths of snood ready to go.
