i know it after the event but just read you post.
i fished reculver in kent not notorious for sole. but about midday 70 yards out i hit a 1lb 7 oz dover sole on lug and mackerel coctail.
when i lived in brighton i fished hove beach and to my amazement on a millpond sea on a balmy summer evening. i caught 6 sole on rag about 10 yards out where the shingle meets the sand. its not the isle of wight but you may try some variations

yeah i heard garden worm are ok, but i read somwhere mackrell are of no interest to the sole, in fact only some sort of chemical found in worm and shellfish are of great interest to them. the only fish that contain this chemical are doggies and rays!!! so if you catch sole on worm with maccy cocktail, they were probably only interested in the worm part of it!
