Just read in total sea fishing mag sonik are to release in april 2016 the new Gravity HT!,Said to be a stiffer tipped version of the gravity surf.If the gravity surf can cast so well then what abt this new baby ! Im excited to read this!,i think this rod is a rod to watch out for!But at the same time bite detection is gonna suffer with this rod but its designed for Uk conditions so its definitely gonna cause a big interest as the gravity surf is such a big hit !Ive got my eye on the gravity surf(thinking of getting it sometime in the near future) but now since with this new more powerful HT model i m not sure which to go for ?I think the gravity surf with its excellent bite detection is more fun ?(And oh i fish for small to medium sized fish only but i love to cast long distances !) Will owners of this rod please share your views ?
Thanks in advance

The current gravity surf rod will smack a 5 oz lead and worm bait , fish bait fair size a long way 150 yds plus no problem with a ground cast soft tip section but once you get down a couple of feet it is solid. If the HT version does what the current model will do with 6 oz and big bait they could have the ultimate uk style continental rod !!!!!

I have cast this rod on grass well over 200 yards so you will not be disappointed with the distance of the standard gravity surf , but with a stiffer tip on the HT who knows what it can do !!

Just can,t get my head around this Continental rod mullarky !! I,m a traditional surf rod man, I know people harp on about huge distances with a braid loaded fixed spool and an over head thump, but I just luv casting with traditional surf rods be it ground cast or swinging the lead and that sweet sing of a finely tuned Multiplier reel !! Old habits die hard I s,pose lol. All these Conti rods I see have a reel seat fixed in the up position. Are they any good with multipliers ? or just suited to a mangle ?? A

Hiya Bigaal, i know this does'nt answer your question regarding using conti rods with multi's but i was in the same situation as you- love the whole fishing/casting experience with multi's.
Suffering with back problems over recent years which have really affected my casting i tried the conti rod/fixed spool combo but after fishing reel down with multi's for over 25 years just could'nt get into fishing with f/spool, it didnt feel as comfortable or satisfying.
After much rod waggling in tackle shops & trawling these forums i bought a pair of Greys Triplex T160M's.
I've found them light compared to my other shore rods considering they're 16ft long, a nice tip with plenty of grunt lower down the blank & using an OTG cast could'nt believe how far a 4 & 5oz lead went when i first used them, plus a sliding reel seat.

Ok guys maybe I,ll give one a thrash a mates offered to lend me his Gravity and Shimano reel for a trial. Problem is I,ve got a full set of traditional surf rods and multipliers, so if I get on with it it,s even more expense !!!! Can,t see me feeling comfortable with a fixed spool tho to be honest A

You don't need a continental rod to use braid and fixed spool. I've found that you can cast very powerful rods with fixed spool and braid leader. If anything your casting is much more consistent and accurate there's very little wasted power. 7oz and cod bait is fairly effortless as long as your technique is sound and you don't try and thrash it from the off. I would go as far and say it will outcast just about anything with a bait. You would need to be dropping down to .28 mono and tourney reel to get anywhere near. You also get to see bites, land fish that would otherwise be lost to heavy ground. I wouldn't dream of going back to mono unless I was stuck in the middle of mono using numpties who can't untangle crossed lines or cast straight. Getting pulled in with braid can be a nightmare especially in the dark.

Getting back to the Sonik, the std rod is excellent for lighter ground and gentle casting but the heavier tip will be perfect for the overhead lobbers looking for easy distance with bigger leads and a possibility of a bit of weed. Just like anything I can't see them standing up to repeated full blown casts with 6-7 oz. For that you need something with a bit of pedigree. Time will tell I guess but if sonik want to give me one to I'd try my best to make it a 4pc.

The new sonik HT has got me mad ! If the sonik gravity can cast so well then this new stiff tipped rod will just absolutely fly ! Its just that here its sandy beaches 100%(clean ground)n the tip on the gravity surf would work so well on small-med fish but at the same time the thought of casting d new gravity HT ! WHEW !Gents this a real dilemma for me any advise i would duly appreciate.Good news is that the gravity HT isnt due out till april 2016 so that gives me lots of time to enjoy many sleepless nights all the more !

I have recently purchased a gravity surf. It's great for seeing the smallest of bites develop. Does make it more interesting rather than just seeing the better bites.
Sounds like for the fishing you intend to do with it the current rod really does tick all your boxes. Casting isn't everything. Fishing to the features that are on the beach that hold the fish is far more important.
Is there gulleys on the beaches that you possibly need the extra casting distance for?
