Does anyone have an idea of design of traps for spiders ? They frequently attack my baits , and occasionally , dont let go , and end up on my plate !! They taste great ...a cross between crab , lobster and langoustine ,. I know commercially , nets , and adapted lobster pots are used , but just for added interest and fun , is there anything for hand-hauling ??

I appreciate your responses , I am really looking for something I can drop and retrieve off my boat , without a pot hauler .... The design is the main query , I,m thinking of a rectangular shape , currently , but its also the weight ... There,s not much prob with tidal , or interference issues in the area ..I,d like to have something large enough to get a few , but light enough to not give a hernia getting it back !! 20 to 30 feet depth ..

I would check with the NWSFA about pots, the current regs say that you are only allowed 5 pots per vessel, 2 lobsters caught in any 24 hour period and no store pot. The above does not apply if you are a commercially registered vessel. The regs if I remember include any trap for shellfish or crustaceans. All species of crab & lobster have specified size limits & catch numbers. I cannot quote the exact regs as they are in Wales & I am stuck in Cheshire! Check with the NWSFA they are very helpful & will send you any info. The permit was free and lasted a couple of years. I stand to be corrected as it is last year since we set any pots.

i only say this because over here on the northeast coast you are limited to the number of crab, lobsters, whelks you can collect from the shore or boat. and you must have a licence.

ours doesnt include spiders though as they are rare over here.

you will catch spiders in inkwell or parlour pots, parlour pots can be baited up and left for a few days but inkwells need to be hauled every day if possible.

A permit is required to fish for lobster or crab along the north west and north wales coast. This allows you to put out upto 5 pots and take 2 lobsters a day, or i think 2 crab and 1 lobster a day but you will need to look up this information on the links below. All pot markers need clearly identifying with either your permit number mobile number or house number and postcode.

The good news its free to apply and gain the permit, they send you permit stickers, a laminated fish chart and a galvanised steel crab/lobster measure. The permit does have an expiry date where you will need to apply again.

As its free there is no reason not to cover your backside and do it legally.
Some other posts have mentioned unhappy commercial crab and lobstermen coming across the pots you have laid. I am not going to name and shame but in cardigan there is a lobster boat who will quite happily destroy other commercial lobstermens pots and wont think twice if he spots pleasure potters with pots in what he calls his territory.

With this in mind i always keep well away from other people pots and areas.
