This knot was featured in a magazine recently and seemed like a good idea. The standard leader knot is rubbish so I gave it a go. Problem is I can't seem to tie it properly. The first part is easy and straightforward (forming the loop in the main line), but after doing the leader part I can't get the coils to snug together neatly. As a result sometimes it is a strong knot and sometimes it parts quite easily.
Any tips on tying the thing properly?

Hi Rhod / This knot is very strong, I have used it for a very long time now, it is very easy to tie, mind I had the same problem as you, but you know what they say about practice. I don't know where you live but if you live anywhere near Bargoed we have a very good seaangling club, if you are interested, we have members from Cardiff Cwmbran Tredegar treharris, so if you are interested come along we meet every other Wednesday in Lennox club in Bargoed up the side street between the hanbury pub and the police station. the easiest way to tie on a leader is gently heat the end of the leader with a lighter,when you see it start to bubble n melt(jus the very end couple of thou mind) you smply push the end of yer leader(60 lb) on to the metal bit of the lighter so the molten leader forms the shape of the brim of a tophat
you then simply tie yer mainline on in the same way you do for a spaded hook
you may have to do the heating process a couple of times to get the brim shape perfect but practise makes perfect
this method has never failed me or some of the top distance casters around

Mmmm..... Been around for quite a while and know the knot you mean. Sounds great for tournament work. Absolutely useless for dragging tackle back through rock and kelp mind, but thanks for the thought.

ALTHOUGH WE HAVE A LOT OF ROCKS N KELP HERE IV NEVER HAD THE KNOT FAIL ME
ONLY THE MAINLINE YOUR OBVIOUSLY NOT DOING IT RIGHT :lol:

i have to agree its the best leeder knot around & the simplest, ive been using the lighter trick over rough ground & reefs for years & ive never been snapped up at the knot
truth is u can lead a fisherman to water but u cant teach em to tie knots haha!

Thanks for the advice. I'm sorry I still don't think the blob knot is the one for me. If I can't get a grip on the Spider then I'll probably switch to 80 lb braid straight through. Hopefully then the trace will snap before the mainline.
