Thinking of spinning for bass at dawn this weekend. Can you catch bass on a dexter or a plug while its still dark or is it a good idea to take some bait until the sun starts coming up?

Predatory fish like bass, who can't rely on out and out speed to hunt prey often come into their own when half light gives them an edge. I have caught them on occasions with barely any light at all.
They are often braver and on the lookout dawn and dusk for any prey that seems to be injured or in trouble - so try to mimic that with the dexter. Sharp little pulls and let sink with gentle reel-ins. Being braver in the near dark they will often stray towards the surface too, so a popper can come into it's own - again mimicry of a fish in trouble.
Many places long the coast have sufficient artificial light to catch the shiny surfaces of a dexter and such - just try it out with a selection of lures over time and see what works - keep experimenting.
