Another great days fishing out with Ross on Spoton Charters. An early start but with great weather from the off saw us stopping at Berry Head for some bait. As the the tide was a small one the plan was to anchor up when the tide stopped moving and ledger for Ling and Conger. Feathers in the water by 7.15am and we started to pull in some fish, very few Mackerel but some of the biggest Herring I think I've ever seen, Bristol Boy James pulled in a stonker of a Herring and I just wish we'd taken some snaps. After 20 mins we had enough bait and it was off to the first wreck. As there was still movement in the tide we started to fish with sidewinders and shads and it wasn't long before the first fish were being landed. Mostly Ling with odd Pollock also being caught and the first of the larger Whiting were brought onboard (for a Bristol Channel shore angler seeing 4lb+ Whiting caught just doesn't seem natural!). As the tide slackened off we anchored up and lowered chunks of fish and squid over the side on 8/0 and 10/0 hooks and the bigger Ling started to come out to play. Biggest of the day was a brute of a 30lber caught by Plymouth Bob with a good sprinkling of upper 20lb fish also taken including a 27lber taken by veteran angler Dave Rogan. In amongst all the Ling and Pollock it was good to some of first of the seasons Cod also caught on orange shads and twintails. All in all a perfect days angling with a good natured crew and sparkling spring weather.
