I've decided to bite the bullet.

So which one should I go for? Mr Fish you're advice would be most welcome. :)

To help you help me.....

Has anyone ever tried these for pike fishing? I live in land locked Hertfordshire so having another reason to justify the purchase would be good!

Most of my bass fishing will be from the shore on the south coast (east sussex)

I'm currently using a 9ft Hardy Sirrus spinning rod 15-45g which is a bit spongey in all honesty so would I be better off sticking to a 9ft one? or going for something a bit smaller/lighter?

So which one, 240 or 270?

Also, I'll most likely be attending Weymouth but only on Sat/Sun. Would a certain person be able to bring one over with him? Payment can be arranged beforehand but as you're coming over anyway you might aswell save yourself the postage and me the hassle of too many questions from the wife.... :fishing:

Its a difficult one really as most peoples styles are different. I so love my 240 Super Mix, and Bob that I fish with also swears by his 240 for the style of fishing we do. The great thing with the Super Mix is it is soo diverse with its capabilities. I can go from using a 7g jighead to a 35g Press Bait and the rod preforms beautifly. Will you be using it for Pike from a boat? If so then the 240 is the one. And yes mate, I will be bringing one or two rods to Weymouth so we should meet up and compare rods!!

Yeah Graham could be right, I am only going on what I know from using quite a few of these rods from boats and "easy" shore marks. I was told by my french friends a few years ago that we will all start using Dragons, Ultimate Ones and Rod Bars, and as time goes on we will adapt to what is more comfortable and better. Maybe I am just jumping the gun a bit and suggesting rods that are too advanced for many anglers on here!! I'll get my hard hat on now and set to sea!! Seriously though, without knowing the terrain, conditions and general size of the bass you are likely to catch it is a very hard question to answer. I still think everyone will eventually be using 7' and 8' rods for all their fishing soon.

well if it helps mick its been 40 yrs off the shore for me and what i will say is that your work with the red rods and the miriads of lures you put on our lines, has opened up a whole new world of fishing not only to me but all of the fishing community of the world and that goes without saying,,,:notworthy:notworthybut to add to this mick one thing you did for me was give me the tools of my trade in modern lure fishing but learning the trade is a different matter for both boat and shore, you cannot teach watercraft,, even if you give your prospective clients the hard sell that just is not fair when you are paying big bucks for rods, reels and lures

Watercraft indeed is the most valuable thing in any anglers arsenal, man I wish I could paint it red and sell it, but I cant. It comes with time on the water, and I am always impressed, like I was when I fished with you and Pat, at how you just look at an area and know if its right. That comes, like I say, with age and hours of angling from a boat or shore marks.

Getting back on topic though, the guy was asking which size Super Mix he should buy, I have both sizes in stock so on the business side of things I really dont care, but on an anglers side of things I want the guy to get whats right for him, and personally I think if he buys a 270 he may be absolutely delighted with it or mat wish he had gone shorter. My best solution is meet me in Weymouth and have a cast with both models.

That sounds good to me, I wasn't sure if you had the 240 in stock but I think that's the one I'd prefer. If it's okay i'll take either one off you on the day, I'll bring the credit card!!!

I'm still a novice when it comes to bass fishing so maybe this is too much too soon but I've always been a tackle tart with my fly gear and as so many people swear by these rods then that's good enough for me! After all you get what you pay for these days. I do believe that good gear brings confidence and that in itself will help you catch more, well that's my excuse!!! :D

But Van Stools are made in China now Gee!!!!!!
Quit right Mick :thumbs::thumbs:

I do not understand the fascination with the VS reels at all. I did indeed own one quit a few years ago, long before Quantum’s takeover and the consequent move of the production to China. I have to honestly say there has not been a reel in my extensive collection that I have been more desperate to get rid off, even at a considerable loss.

These are reels made for American surf fishermen that more often than not have to swim in order to reach their marks, and much of the time fishes in wetsuits. Yes, it is a reel that has the major benefit surviving being completely drowned in the salt, but my good do they have some major disadvantages when used in most UK bass fishing situations.

First of all, the VS reels line-lay are absolutely appalling compared to even a £50 Daiwa or Shimano reel, and this IS a major disadvantage when extra casting distance is needed. Secondly, the bail less VS version is an absolute pain to use during anything else than straight retrieve, and the jerky retrieve that works so well with many of the better sea bass plugs will force you to manually put the line back into the line roller more times than you would appreciate. Yes, but I can buy the bailed VS version, which will alleviate that particular problem I hear you say. Yes, indeed you can, but the smallest VSB100 version weighs a ridicules 16oz (450 grams) and believe you me your wrist would know after a days fishing.

The VS reels are designed and manufactured for fishing very different conditions than you would encounter during 95% of UK sea bass fishing, and it’s aimed at some rather more heavy-duty species than our sea bass.

If you are going to spend $6-700 on a reel for UK bass fishing you have some considerable better alternatives available than the VS range.

Some people like long rods and some like short rods,,,their is nothing wrong with either but,,,,,,,,,,you will always work plugs better with the short rod and the basic laws of physics backs this up.
The advantage of the longer rod is that in the right hands you may get a few extra yards if you think thats important, and if you are high up from the water etc.
Personally I have always liked short rods for lure/plug fishing because they give me the control and feeling that I like when working plugs.
Its purely down to the individual when choosing your rod legnth and what suits you best and where you are fishing.
