Hello - in a recent thread ( http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170694 ) it has been discussed to make a few stickys that may help cover a lot of the more commonly asked questions. I have made a few threads, this being one of them, in which people can post questions and advice relating ONLY to the title, in this case:

What Gear Do I Need?

This thread is designed to be a place where people can say what gear they find best, ask what weight plug people should use or what braid to put on. Again - keep it factual and lets start helping each other in an organised manner lol

Cheers.... now, who's going first..... :D

I have 20lb power pro braid, could anyone recommend me some flouro leader?

I'm not sure what line strength/ make to go for

thanks
Seaguar 30lbs is what I use.
The flouro is 100% and is top line stuff.

hi all....am gonna give braid a go this year, as have heard that it will help getting the feel of some of my plugs(was mainly using spoons last year)

the question is.....power pro or fireline?? my local tackle shop only stocks fireline(would prefer to buy local) but have heard PP is the nuts.....also which would you recommend for a braid virgin.....are some easier to use?

thanks in advance.....pere:victory:

PP and Fireline are both very good.
The fireline has more of a 'fused' look about it and the PP looks more like 'braid.
I use both of them but would have to say that the PowerPro is 'different class'.
It has a world wide reputation as being the top line and you can spool up and forget its braid,,,,just use it.
I would go for the .28 so you can get some of your plugs back when snagged up in those bassy areas etc.
Check out Vidars posts about the breaking strains etc.

hi fella's,

ive bought myself a savage gear bushwacker rod 8'6" 15-40g, for bass fishing and used it this weekend with an old shimano baitrunner 4000 size.

i notice Nick that you advise of a 4000 - 5000 size reel but the 4000 seemed a bit heavy for the rod so i was thinking about getting a 3000 size instead.

any thoughts?

cheers, marc
Hi Marc,
Like pisc says the baitrunners (had lots of pairs of them) are heavier than the 'standard spinning reels' that shimano do.
If I was looking for a reel to go on the Bushwacker then I would choose the 4000 size which should be a perfect match.
I have a pair of 2500 spirex shimanos that I have used before but the spool diameter is too small etc.
I dont think you can get better than the 4000 size for our sort of saltwater plugging.

Hi Marc

I am using an shimano exage 4000FA and it matches both the bushwhacker and boner fine
not the best line lay in the world but it has been no problem with .25mm braid and best of all available for under ÂŁ40 if you look arround
hope this helps dai

and my two penneth...
the reels don't have to be Shimano!!!! They make great reels but so do many others. It is the size of the reel and the quality that is important. Make sure it has at least some degree of corrosion resistance, good line lay, enough line capacity and a smooth drag.
Rinse (not drown) in fresh water after each trip, lubricate when needed and away you go.
The reason why I always say 'Shimano' when we are talking about reels is that you are getting a 'known quality' and not something else.

I have just removed my last comment! I agree with your reply but i feel people should not always be steered towards Shimano. Daiwa and the other main brands all do suitable reels too. But like you imply some are better than others. Agreed.

Nothing wrong in advising Shims - best line-lay around & thats half the battle when fighting the old wind knots

Daiwa make some great gear,Iv'e had loads of there rods over the years.
I always think that if you stick to the 'major' big name manufacturers then you wont go far wrong.

thanks for your replies fella's.

looks as though a 4000 size could be the one then, without a baitrunner of course.

ive got no problem with you advising using shimano Nick.. i have used them virtually exclusively for 20 years and still do.. they cant be bettered IMHO.

i hear what you are saying about other manufacturers, such as diawa, and ive never used their reels, but everything of theirs i have ever bought has fallen to pieces within a very short time so i make it a point to never buy anything from them. there are plenty of others who want my hard earned!

thanks for the help fella's.

hi guys. i am generally new to using braid , is it just for plugging but could i use it for bottom fishing and float. i hear it cuts through the tide and in jersey on a pier i fish the most there is alot of current s want to know if it could be used.

yes you can use it for bottom fishing (with a leader) - and its fine for float as it floats itself :)

you can use braid for all of your fishing mate but every braid has different characteristics.. i use braid for almost every type of fishing i do apart from carp fishing.

powerpro floats but others sink but whichever braid you go for should be a tight weave with a round profile otherwise you may suffer with knots and a flat profile will spin and twist.

Hi Marc, perhaps you are harder on kit than some. I have used Daiwa kit for nearly thirty years without any problems. Some of it has taken an absolute hammering and all has been problem free. The fact it has be so reliable is exactly why i use it. Each to their own.

hi mike,

you are right there mate.. i dont tend to look after my gear very well at all but an infinity rucksack i bought destroyed itself the first time i used it and one of their oval brollies leaked like a sieve from day one!

my mate swears by the reels though but ive never had a problem with a shimano fixed spool so, like you, cant see any reason to change.

cheers, marc
