With the glorious weather it had been a long week of waiting for Thursday evening to arrive but eventually it did and my wait to wet a line again was over :clap2:, after 3 lure blanks on the trot I was determined to fish it hard last night and by 20:30 I was ready to go at mark number 1. After witnessing loads of bass crawling all over a mate’s lure the last time I fished there my choice of which lure to start with was a no brainer and I kicked off proceedings with the Patch 100 in Red Katakuchi. On the previous occasion I had struggled to get the distance required with this light lure on my 8ft Bushwhacker so this time I was using my SG Salt paired with my Aernos 3000 for only the second time and I immediately noticed an improvement in casting range . Conditions looked good to me with a slight ripple on the water to diffuse the light and I obviously wasn’t the only one who thought so as I was soon joined by a b****y great seal :eek:hmy:, I didn’t know if that was a good or a bad sign but for once I hoped that a bass wouldn’t grab hold of my lure any moment soon and attract the seal any closer . There were a few fish moving but they must have been too close to shore for my fishing companion’s liking as he left after ten minutes or so in search of easier pickings.

After a biteless half hour I switched to a lure which I haven’t tried before and I gave my Gunfish 95 in Gun metal shad its inaugural dip but again it wasn’t what the fish were after so it was back to the lure box again. The light was fading by now meaning the witching our would soon be upon me and small schools of whitebait began to dapple the surface as they headed for their night time retreats, this was an ideal opportunity to try out a lure which I’ve had for years but never had a light enough set up to fish it properly with so on went the 90mm Maria Angel Kiss in Pearl-Sandeel. I started off with a medium pace retrieve to fish it just below the surface but when this didn’t work I switched tactics to a very slow retrieve which waked the lure enticingly across the top. I’d been fishing like this for maybe 15 minutes when a strange thing happened, the lure was only a couple of meters out when I felt a strange vibration through the rod and the water rippled around my lure like a shoal of piranha were attacking it, I was shocked to begin with and didn’t know if I should stop the retrieve or carry on but as the vibration continued unabated I lifted the lure out of the water to discover this monster attempting to devour my lure! :eek:hmy:

Not only was it was my first fish on my new set up, it was also my first whiting on a lure, the smallest fish I’ve ever caught on a lure and best of all the blank was saved :yahoo: .

By now the tide was well on the flood and my escape route would soon be cut off so after a couple more fruitless casts I made my way back to the car and on to mark number 2.

I arrived at the second mark to find another couple of anglers there already and I made straight for my favoured spot. Now the pressure of the blank was off I hoped that I would have more success but sadly it wasn’t to be, despite trying on top with the Patch 100 I also tried a few shallow divers in the form of the Feed Shallow in Mullet, the 90mm Komomo II in Joker the bass wouldn’t come out to play and when even the Mighty Shiner fails to get a response you know it’s time to go home.

So after a long wait it was all over for another week and once again I’m counting those long hours until the next time . On the plus side though despite the elusive bass staying just that, at least my new gear had a good work out with whitingzilla and my run of blanks is finally at an end :yeah:...... for now! :g:

What a monster Andy lol, it always amazes the size of lure some fish will take.
Never had a whiting so a new one to me but I did manage a codling last year.
Not had an luck myself and I blanked the last 2 night and the sea has been flat calm.
Someone told me that with this sunshine and calm conditions that the bass have moved into deeper water but I don't know if there's any truth in it.
Just to add that last night the mackerel where boiling off Amlwch last night with 2 big shoals and plenty of bait fish. Thanks for the report Andy and now that I see a better photo of you I will change my mind and say Grant Mitchell not Phil lol, all the best mate.

I've always understood that after the spring crab moult the bass move offshore to feed on sprats and mackerel etc during July and August before heading back inshore for the Autumn feeding so what you heard could be based on that?

Great to hear about the mackerel though and surely there must be a few stragglers (bass) still around and after the inshore prey fish? :g:

Very strange that you mentioned Grant Mitchell, imagine my surprise when he just happened to be walking past when I caught whitingzilla and he asked me to take his picture holding it!! :eek:hmy:

eyes bigger than his belly that whiting andy , this is my smallest fish on a lure
:clap2:
Great catch Mal but though it's smaller than mine the lure is smaller too and the fish is bigger in relation to it :bleh:

them rocks behind you look slippery:blink:
Hence the quick retreat before the tide gets too high :roll1:

Ha great catch.
Better than a blank.
You can always tell if there is something different with your lure even if its a little fish! you think you got a little weed or the lure has wrapped it self around line, but ha even a little one makes you happy.
Like mine Thurs night 2 x weaver, both laid out longways would not make the length of the redgill lure, and next night i gutted larger whitebait from the bass i caught.
I wonder weather i can include whitebait as a catch for 2013 by default?
