The SW of Scotland areas - What's hot and what's not?

I'm going to be fishing down in the South West for a few days next week. Cannot wait.

Can anyone who knows the area well, or perhaps anyone who has fished the area recently, please give me an update if you can as to what areas are fishing particularly well, or expected too next week, etc? I'm gonna be fishing alone I think, so I'm not wanting to be fishing particular dodgy spots, or trekking all over the place. I want to spend my time fishing.

I'm not looking for all your favourite spots, just pointers to what's hot and what's not areas. I ain't fishing the Yellow Isle mark at Portpatrick as that nearly finished me off last time. I've been struggling more and more over the last year which is weird as I was always fairly fit prior to then.

Any areas within reasonable travelling range of Auchenlarie Caravan site are potential targets, so any places surrounding Wigtown Bay and Luce Bay, etc, are options.

As it stands at the moment, I'm definitely going to be night fishing Terally Bay, up from The New England Caravan Park. Parking at the lay by, just in front of the house. I'll walk to the left on the beach and fish just to the r/h/s of the rocks (just along from where Mike (Peeler) fished recently I'm sure). I'm planning on getting a couple of rods out there and doing a wee bit of casting around the rocks for pollack, etc during the day using my light telescopic spinning rod. A magic wee rod and reel.

The second spot I was hoping to fish was at Port Logan. It's the large slab of rocks, to the left of the harbour, near to The Port Logan Caravan site. I'm not targeting just Caravan site marks btw:D

Just up from Auchenlarie, is it worthwhile fishing close to the River Cree for flatties. It's been ages since I caught a flounder, and decades since I specifically targeted them. As it's nearby, I'm toying with the idea of maybe a couple of hours with the lighter gear and giving it a bash.

Ideally, I'd love to be in with a chance of a decent sized conger, so the mark around The Cairn at The Isle of Whithorn is pencilled in too. A better chance at night of course, but it looks rather dodgy there on my todd in the dark. A smootie or huss would be absolutely brilliant too. Quite fancy a wee gurnard as well (Terally Bay maybe).

I know you can have a chance of tope at Terally Bay, but I'd imaging they'll more or less be moving on now, decreasing my chances even more.

So that's my grand plan, or at least, a few possible spots to fish. Hopefully I'll have a chance of picking up a mackie or two for bait or I'll maybe manage to buy a few from the boats. Here's hoping I'll have a half decent report to write up on my return.

Cheers 'n' beers! Eric.

Thanks for the replies guys. Every one appreciated.

I got some info from Eric from The Sports Shop in Stranraer off his webpage...

http://fishingstranraer.com/portlogan-portparick-areas-fishing-well-just-now/

There's quite a few entries under Fishing News if you want more info. I had this bookmarked on my previous laptop. Eric is certainly 'on the ball' when it comes to advice from that neck of the woods. Only thing is, I don't know exactly how old the info is. I may drop him an email later. The fishing juices are in full flow now...woohoo! Sorry:oops:

Definitely worth trying around Creetown/Carsluith

You have sussed that out fairly well, wouldn't recommend lone fishing there during darkness, decidedly dodgy.

@lynchy or @tony master might pm you some up to date catch info from around the area, they were here at the weekend.

Snowyman - Thanks for the info and welcome to the site.

Well done on catching the smoothies. Even one of them would be great. Unfortunately, I don't have any crab. I was trying to get some frozen crab with the online bait order for Shane and I, but they were all out of stock (again). The closest I have is a bag of peeler crab and a bag of hermit crab legs & claws. I was going to bring the pack of peeler crab legs and claws to tip off for general species, for the flatties in particular and I suppose I could use quite a few of the larger pieces with the fish bait for the smoothies, etc.

Enjoy the site mate.

Seafoods - Confirmation of Creetown/Carsluith is noted and stored. It would be brilliant to catch a few flounder again. As I said, I've not targeted them for a long, long, time, just caught the odd one while general fishing.

I fished the Isle of Whithorn mark a long time ago as a club match (Predators)...a pint or two in The Steampacket Inn beforehand of course. I remember how awkward it was climbing up and over the rocks, heading straight out, to fish through the night. We fished in pairs for safety and we were all knackered come morning. I think it may be a lot easier if I remember correctly to go slightly to the left hand side of The Cairn. I can't remember how many fish I caught, but I do know I managed to catch a wee strap conger amongst them.

So, thanks again Shaun for the info.

I left you a Guinness on tap in The Steampacket Inn a couple of years ago if you remember (Shane, Neil and I were staying in Burrowhead for a few days). If I'm anywhere near the Isle, I'll set one up for you. It truly is like nectar. That was easily the best pint of Guinness I've ever had. Beautiful.

If I was going through Stranraer way I would probably have did just that. I'll be travelling along the M74/A75 through Dumfries, so won't be near it. I've a good selection of bait apart from the crab, so I'll just need to fish with what I've got unless I get some locally before I go. Cheers!

Heading down that way on Friday staying at clashwhannon for three days. Like yourself Eric I just can't wait to get back down. Been down three times already this year and have learned new marks every time I have been. Hoping to try and get some bass this time but unsure where to go as well. Hope you have a good trip when you get there.

Cheers
Darren.

I was trying to get that site originally as it was close to so many good fishing areas. I think you and I were both down at Burrowhead a couple of years ago at the same time. I'm sure you posted about it just when we got back.

Three trips is good and also good that you're learning new marks all the time. Time is what you need down there as there's always a few places you want to try and in my case, as before, I just don't have enough days down there to do everything I want.

Good luck!

Wee live bait off the rocks for a surprise!!! Set the ratchet! Plenty strap conger all round, calm night needed. Wigtown bay marks worth a go for hounds. Huss will be showing now too.
I may have a last crack at the Tope this weekend.
Also prime mullet time!
If you don't know the marks don't fish alone. If you have to think twice don't bother been a few accidents already this year.
I will be fishing this weekend at some stage, let me know if I can help.

Also Cree will be full of flounders, eels and if you are lucky bass

Thanks for the heads up on the area. I know that you're well respected down there, so I can take your info with confidence. I'm hoping for a conger, even a wee strap one as I'd probably wet myself if I caught 'a biggie'. I'm willing to take the chance though as I've been chasing a double figure one for a wee while now.

I'll do a wee armchair recce of Wigtown Bay as well. I'll really need to try and get a long break sometime to really get to know the area and try out the places I want to fish.

I saw a huge shoal of mullet many years ago when I was on holiday at the Isle of Whithorn It was in the basin in the harbour and the water was alive with them. It looked like mackerel because there was so many of them. I went back the next day geared up for them and they never appeared.

Sounds as though a couple of hours flounder fishing near the site could be productive. Shaun (Seafoods) confirmed my intention earlier too. I think I'll try the spot I found at Carsluith after Shaun suggested around there too.

Thanks again and good luck with the tope!

I am no expert as I have only fished the Isle for 3 days when on holiday last year.
But I had flounder every day from the end of the harbour wall casting at 45 degrees towards the opposite land. They took black lug, rag worm and peeler crab.

Eric, all the areas you've mentioned are good marks and the times you've mentioned are when the best fishing is to be had. Don't worry about peeler for smoothies cos if they are there they'll take hermit crab/rag and long strips of squid. Try fishing the flat rock on the north side of Logan if you're after a conger. You never know what that area will throw up!

Don't want to hijack the thread but as I am talking about the same area thought you wouldn't mind. Most of the marks I was hoping to get to this weekend were on the mull itself approaching and up to the lighthouse as the boys prefer spinning and using assorted lures and jellies. But looking at the weather I think that area is going to be a no go. Will be trying some of the marks mentioned at night such as terally. But would appreciate any info on a safe mark I could get to if the weather is a bit naff. Just something were the boys could still spin for Pollock.
Cheers

Judging by Saturday's weather for that area you maybe want to target areas around east tarbet bay, with the wind at your back you'll be relatively sheltered (but not from the rain, you're keen btw).

I wouldn't venture out but that's just me, Sunday looks a bit better, if it's not weeded out some of the south facing beaches might be worth a bash

Hi Darren,

That's not a problem mate. I wish I could help you out more, but I'm trying to pick up safe marks myself. If it's going to be a stinker of a weekend and dangerous, there's no point in pushing it too far, especially with the boys.

Terally sounds decent at night and you know it will be safe for you and the boys. You just never know what you can pick up, especially at night. If you're thinking of the same bit as me (see my original post), then here's a video I found on YouTube. It looks like the same area and he's spinning in the rock area I mentioned. That would suit the boys for a bit. See Peelers videos too of the M.O.G area. Here's the video link...

If you fancy some safe fishing for flatties and don't mind travelling a wee bit further to get there (by car), I'll dig out the info I found and pm you it later. Nice and comfy by the looks of it, so just what you need if the weather's bad.
