A good whack with something heavy between the eyes makes them go very quiet, so there must be some nervous system. I have "killed" them, hung them over the side on a rope to keep fresh, then found them still twitching at the end the the day. A bit gruesome really. Best to whack 'em and wing 'em as Ron says. One theory says if you lob the guts over the side you'll not catch another roker from that spot that day - I haven't risked testing that tale. (And by the way, hello PETA!)

I heard Greenpeace want them on the endangered list. Thet were protesting outside morrisons about it.
That surprises me because there still seems to be plenty in the sea and they are not exactly a popular table fish. The few anglers that do like them are hardly going to make a dent in the stocks, I wonder if they are being caught and sold abroad by trawlers?

Hiya,

It aint the stocks of thornies that's the problem, it's the other rays and skates that are landed that's the problem. Most of catches are landed already winged so there is little chance of identifying the species it came from. So to combat this, like the Commercials Greenpeace have lumped all the species together.

There is a big market for rays (wings) up around london and the north, so i was told by a local fish buyer.
Trawlers off north cornwall catch loads. You are right, they are quite common.

I think greenpeace got confused (for a change) with skate (ray is often sold as skate) which are depleated in numbers and (i think) grow pretty slowly. They reproduce slowly and so cannot handle sustained fishing pressure, unless of course catch and release is practiced.

While we are on the subject of killing fish, whats the quickest way of killing a Conger Eel. I`ve been told by the mother in-law to bring one home as she hasn`t had it for years (i think she was talking about eels :g: !!!)

Cheers

grap the eel by the gills with both hands, bend down and swing the eel over your back so its belly is outfacing, pull the head over your shoulder, this will break its neck plus many nerve synapsis, and will quell the biggest eel.
Are you selling tickets to watch that? Should be a good show
