Hi everyone i read a report today on small tope being caught from ogmore and porthcawl. i was wondering if theirs ever been a big tope caught at these spots or my theory is their small. but the big ones must be around aswell. it would be great to target big tope of the shore instead of off a boat your thoughts on this please lads cheers nathan.

We used to get a fair few off Monk Nash in the sixties and seventies up to about 40lbs I think was the best I seen, along with very big Monkfish. These fish were caught from the beginning of June at low water, wire traces were a must.

we had tope the other week from the boat in Penarth, the small ones are about, but my guess is the big ones come close in to lay the young etc, but there minds aint on feeding till they are out deeper.

The charter boats in Penarth harbour used to regulary bring in big monkfish and the odd Angler fish from the sand bar off Cardiff in the early 80's. I can also remember finding a dead Angler fish of about 40lb and a dead common skate of about 70lb on Penarth dock beach in the late 70's. :bb:

me and a couple of mates found a HUGE dead angler fish washed up on the beach at penarth about 10yrs ago, It was whilst I was fishing a comp actually, was quite tempted to go and weigh it in for a laugh! haha

Yeah - think I saw a dead one at around about then next to the slipway... Could of easily fit my head into its mouth (not that I tried!!!).
I heard someone caught a 50lb+ there, kept it, but regretted doing so when someone told him that it must have been over 80 years old!
Think I would have too - these fish take so long to reach sexual maturity...
