right im a big fan of penn so i would say either the penn powerstick range ie 13ft three piece comes in a hard case or if you preffer the bigger than go for one of those or there might be a couple of shops down your way with the deals on the ppt jetstream still in stock or if not the surfblaster seatrek three piece 12ft but it has a light tip and a heavy tip so you can change to suit!:)

go more for a bass type or heavy carp size. you will be able to cast to distance with a 3oz lead and use it for spinning etc in the summer.

I think we're talking here of a multi-section standard beach rod, rather than a two-piece bass rod. The Penn Surfblaster Seatrek is an excellent rod, as is their Jetstream. I own both of these. Shimano and others also make multi-section rods, as has been pointed out, but I wouldn't exactly call the Penns or any of the others cheap. Imax have just released a range of three and four-piece rods, but their RRP is around the £200 mark. The Penn Powerstick three-piece is reasonably priced, though.

Also have a look at this firm who at present sell only on ebay:

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Firefly-Angling

Their own website is:

www.FireflyAngling.com

If you run a search on this forum for "firefly" you'll find some good comments about them. I've just ordered their bass rod and am awaiting its arrival. I'll post a review when it arrives and I've had a chance to use it.

Other firms produce low-end multi-section rods for under £30 but I have no idea what the quality will be like.

Cheers,

John

I have the Shimano STC beachcaster ,very , very good but nearly £120.
The4 piece Penn travel rod is about four 1/2 feet long when broken down.
The Shakespeare travel looks OK for chucking in a car boot.
If you fancy the Shimano see my "review" in the tackle section.

I have just taken delivery of the Veals Sure travel six peice beach rod developed with Mike Ladle - I've only had a quick half hour fish with it so far but it seemed pretty good and I'd say well worth £70. When broken down its in a hard case only 29 inches long! Great for holidays with the wife and kids (when there isn't much room in the car) or for packing in a suitcase for flights!

Shakepeare Salt Spin gets my vote. Its only £35, but is more of a light rod. Use it for spinning, plugging, jellyworming/sandeels, flatties, bass and float work. Handles 1-3oz fine, could be used for lighter beachcasting. IMHO a great rod to have in the car, i have one in my boot along with a Mike Ladle 4surepin, so if the mood take me,,,

I have looked at the Fox Trek beach and would have bought it last year if I had the spare cash. I have a shimano stc travel 2.75lb and it can chuck a 3oz lead a long way! The Fox trek is on my wish list now but want to have a look at the Diawa & Penn beach travels before buying. It's hard to find one shop that stocks more than one or two types of travel rods! The Shimano's & Diawa'a pack down under 30" in the tube!!
