What do people consider distance?

Now I know the question is gonna be very individual..
But what would be considered a distance cast ? 130? 150? more?
Good day with the wind behind me, I reckon (distance rig!) I could hit 130'ish!!!
And that's only cause i have had some lessons, still improving!

130 with a baited rigs isn't bad going. It's a lot further than most people think. A football pitch is about 100.

At the risk of reopening old arguments...

75% of anglers on a beach will be doing well to put a baited rig 80 yards.

Another 15% are probably hitting between 80 - 100 yards.

10% are capable of putting a baited rig out to 100 yards plus, and maybe 2-3% can hit over 150 yards on the beach with bait.

Me? I've got a field pb of 245 yards and I reckon on a good day with a following wind I can put a baited rig to maybe 140 - 150 yards if I catch it just right but my average is probably more like 120 - 130 if I'm safely going full tilt. And ultimately distance casting is just another tool in the armoury, useful at times but I've caught as many fish at 15 yards as I have at 140...

Never been on a field but clipped bait prob 80ish on a multi set up. Fix spool clipped bait ive emptied the spool power aero type 5 loaded with 30lbs penn international braid on several occasions. So i reckon distance to me is anything between 70 to 100. More than 100 well i dont tend to think about it. Though ive cast &practice leads (without bait a bit further but hard to measure on the beach) .. and its a good way to kill time when fishing is dead. best bet is go to a field ... cast and find your average and top 5 cast.. distance will be your top 5 cast. The rest is average :)

I'm doing some practice on my local cricket pitch.
I'd recommend taking a pair of long nose pliers with you to dig the lead out as it generally sinks well in on impact.

So far I've managed to miss the umpires.
Here we are discussing the one that got away......

I think what should be taken into account is the consistency of caster. Ones PB mite be great, but how consistent has he hit that distance?

I did a test in 2012, my casting was just getting a bit better learning the basics. A lead Otg with grippers on I hit 190 yards measured down the beach, same setup with huge float on I consistently hit 150, only a 40 yard loss. Iv never had a chance to cast down a field so I'm used to casting in a fishing environment. Since then my casting has improved a great deal, have not measured it, but going by my tight line, what's left on my reel I'm getting 130- 140' odd times well into 150 range, that dont mean thats where my bait has landed, as line bow take up the slack. I will do a experiment this year on video, and cast a clip down rig down the beach, and measure it.

Some days I'm lucky to get 70 yards into a head on wind, so it varies a great deal even to what ground I'm standing on. I think if most anglers measured their cast, they would be shocked how far it's really going. 100 yards is allot further than most would think. Even my estimate could be off. If someone says to me I casted the bait at distance, im thinking at least 100 yards, but to them it could be their max they can reach what ever that may be, its one of them variable things.

Dunno about distance but some beach power casters should learn there is such a thing as direction as well!
The amount of times I've seen a 100 yards plus cast sail merrily out..... Parallel to the beach, so actual fishing is probably about 40 yards.

I've only been beach fishing a couple of years, and before my first session, I had a couple of hour sessions casting along the beach, to get comfortable, and to see how far I could chuck. Yes, I did look out for other people... My best was around 85 yards. Not bad. I reckoned I must've improved over a couple of years but, having loaded my reel with a 100m of braid recently, I still don't cast it all off the spool, even having lost 10m to a braid birdnest! So I'm well and truly in the sub-100m class.

I think that when you add in all the factors. Limited space to swing, sloping beach, wind against you, large baits, reels not set up for casting (brakes and mags set so we don't get birdies) I would suggest that not many of us reach our potential. I do watch others on the beach and I don't think I am that far behind most and further than others, but don't consider myself that good a caster and it is an area I want to improve on.

Funny that this should come up now.

I think ( thought ) that on the beach with a following wind I can reach about 100 yds with a baited trace. On a good day, a very good day.
I was fishing yesterday, and used a multi that I have not had out for about 6 months.I discovered that the line was knotted at a point but couldnt remember how far in it was knotted, come to that, couldnt remember knotting it anyway.......anyway I was backcasting way past the knot ( 15lb mono) and the knot was only appearing when I wound in to rebait, not when I was taking up the slack after the cast.

Today I decided to reespool the multi with fresh line, I use a home made line winder that holds 1 yard of line per turn of the wheel, I was suprised when I wound the line off the reel that the length of line from the "rig" end to the knot, including the leader was 133 yards, so I am guestimating that yesterday I had maybe 15 to 20 yards bow in the line, as it was a neep tide with not much pull.
So if that is right, and it is big maybe, I may had been casting well over 130 yards, that, for me , is a very big distance cast for fishing, I doubt that I could do that 3 times out of 20, but despite not catching very much, I am quite pleased that I managed that .
I do not consider myself to be a big hitter, but am reasonably consistent on the beach, so, just maybe, I can chuck a bit further than I thought.

Not that it matters, I prefer to fish closer in, less work really, I was only whacking it out because there was absolutley nothing biting closer in. Only had one fish all day !

Dave.

Thinking I can do a comfortable 80yds but don't need to do that in yarmouth.

Must get some instruction as I have a bad habit from coarse fishing of feathering the cast.
Must be taking 5 to 10yds of a cast and can't break the habit.

But know I don't need to do it.

See quite a few people who's setup isn't that distance friendly, bulky rigs crap line type of thing, they think they doing 100m, more like 50, balanced on rock's or with limited space I'd guess I'm lucky to get 75 yards. otg off a decent surface like someones already said it's a lot lot easier to get to 100 yards. Been using a Canon recently hated it at first with direction so just over head thumping to get the release right, can see it adding 39 yards sooner or later.

I have no idea how far I cast with or without bait for that matter. How do you workout how far you are casting?
Go onto Google Earth. The proper one and not the one from Google Maps.
Find a location you can cast on, ie footy pitch.
Then go to Google Earth, click Tools/Ruler. Set it to measure in Metres then click the first square locator to the beginning of the cast and move to the far end of the cast and click again. It'll show the distance in the box for the measurement.

You may be pleasantly surprised at the result, OR NOT.......

How to use Google Earth to measure your cast.

That's a Great reply mate, distance fishing for me is 100 yards, that's 300 feet, a bloody long way.
I have heard lots of lads who claim to be fishing "about 100 yards" and they are kidding themselves. Try casting over a football pitch and you will get a feel for what distances your hitting. Add a couple of hooks and some bait and you can knock 40% off your distance. It's very deceiving watching a lead disappear out of sight and think you are hitting the horizon.

Also take into consideration clothing, weather, are your shoulders and arms tight from cold,is the gear dry, lastly(probably not) cold and wethands:cold: You can tie a marker(powergum?) on the main line on a good cast so to run it back off and measure it when home.

If distance really matters, from both what I've seen and personal experience, most people would get further if they changed their multipliers for a fixed spool, filled it with decent braid, added a tapered leader and learnt a decent overhead chuck.

Also learn to tie a decent rig. Something that keeps the bait(s) close to the lead.

I've witnessed a lot of grunting, accompanied with a loud swish of the rod, only for the bait to land 60-80 yards out.

Also the weather plays a huge roll. The difference in what I can reach is very different in a head-wind to what I can get with one coming from behind me.

Finally, however, remember that you can cast over their heads.

Also a lot of anglers use powerful rods which they cannot get the best out of, surely it's better to have a rod that suits the angler and not the ego, personally I use match style rods, they're suitable for 90% of my fishing, only use more powerful rods when the conditions dictate it, think a lot of anglers distance's would improve by just using a rod matched to their level, and would probably enjoy casting more. BTW i'm not a super caster !!

Could not agree more Tim BUT while i may not get allot more distance with my profile evos the distance between the corners of my mouth when i smile after i use them has improved a hundred fold.
