They should be around well into October in most south Scotland areas, perhaps even later, depending on the weather, etc.

Hi

There are so few Mackerel being caught this year, i doubt if you will
be able to fill a plastic bag, never mind a freezer. Fished Loch long
last week and caught 4 in 8 hours. On the exact same day last year,
at the same mark, using the same means, i caught 69. This year so
far,i have caught 34 mackerel. Last year at the same time, the count
was 316 (most of which were returned untouched/unharmed).
Previous years i have caught similar amounts, to last year. This is the
worst year i can recall in 30 years-decimated. My brother and all his
mates fishing other marks close to loch long have fared worse.

This situation may have to do with the 33% increase in the annual mackerel quota for 2009. In anycase, best of luck.

Regards
James

Agreed fished Loch Long this morning with my son we fished constantly for four hours and didn't get a fish:wallbash:

Last week we fished six hours for four mackerel-something drastic has happened -realy cant see us working up the enthusiasm to go back up there 40 miles very disillusioned four of us caught about 120 at the same spot this time last year -

Anyone know if its worth doubling the distance and going to Furnace shortly??

weather and tides can be play a part in mackeral fishing as well.

i find after a settled period and a high tide just at dusk does the trick. not had any problems getting mackeral at loch long at all this year. only problem can be getting the bait through them i have found.

i personally wouldnt bother with them if theres a colour in the water i always prefer clear and claim for the old mackies.

my bait freezer is starting to fill nicely only targeted them twice in loch long and had plenty.

Doubt it is anything to do with the quota increase.

We are saying that there are so few mackies where
we fish (Loch Long/ and locations nearby), because
this is a fact. Nobody is saying that there are almost
no mackies, everywhere in Scotland. I would have
thought this would have been utterly obvious from
the posts which preceded yours.
