Whiting bitten in half

Hi guys,

I've recently started boat fishing as my father bought a boat not so long ago.
A couple of months ago, we were fishing this new bank we've found with a drop from 40ft to 13ft, clearly visible with waves on the surface.

We anchored about 200ft from the drop and caught some whiting and flatties.
Two times I reeled up and found that I had hooked a whiting but it was bitten in half!
Didn't see a bite or anything.
I tried livebaiting as well as mackerel flappers after that but without results.

It's been puzzling me for some time what might've been down there.
I suppose it's some kind of shark species but I have no clue which one as the only shark I've caught was a 2 ft smoothhound.
I do want to try this place again in 2017 but maybe better prepared!

Any ideas?

Here's a pic.

Don't eels have more of a crushing jaw than serious teeth? I mean, I know you wouldn't stick your fingers in there , but that whiting looks bitten clean through rather than mangled, that's what made me think of spurs?
Have had whiting on the boat bitten through by spurs before, but can't recall what those bites were like tbh

very clean cut indeed ,don't think a strap, :thumbsdown:would be more ripped flesh ,and finish the job ,bull Huss wont do that either imo ,I'd say small Tope looking how clean cut and the sharp curve it's left ,even the small ones can draw a nasty slice, razor sharp mini perfect killing machine:sneaky: ,if your getting bitten off as well then Tope will be the coalprit,:wink:live bait rig with thick mono or good quality wire ,
good luck and keep us posted
bomb:thumbsup:

Thanks for the replies, could be a shark indeed. I remember my dad telling me something big, brown chased his plaice to the surface, this was on a previous session before the one mentioned above.

The picture dates from august, do you think these kind of banks will produce sharks in winter (now?)
Would this be a good place for cod as well?

Banks will hold all sorts of fish in season. Not sure where you're fishing but it's got to be worth a try.
I expect the whiting are there in force now and the likes of spurdog and cod will be chasing them.
Finding a feature to fish over is often more than half the battle...
