He certainly seems to think match anglers are the cream, one of the greatest anglers I have ever met who has a world wide species list does not fish matches. Match fishing is great if that is what turns you on but it holds nothing for me and thousands like me. I have seen the top prizes go to rank amateurs. :whistling

It's never occurred to me before that I need to 'cut it' amongst other anglers.
Curious point of view.
I go fishing because I like fishing.

totally agree, main reason most people including me wont join a club is because of people like that thinking their better than everyone else.i rarely struggle to catch fish when theres fish about so im happy.:fishing:

think you may be missing a point or two here though.

how do you think youngsters learn sea fishing? Unless their parents were into fishing how would they take up the hobby? How do they get to venues?

I know that when I started at 11 I learnt all the basics by joining the local sea angling club.

Yes...a lot of clubs do fish competitively most weekends but there a still a good number of good anglers in these clubs that are willing to show youngsters the ropes.

By scaring people off joing clubs I think you may be "tarring them all with the same brush" so to speak. If you personally don't want to fish competitively then fine...but there are lots of people that do.

I think joining a club is a great way to learn new skills, new venues and get advice from some great anglers.

Matt

PS...I know who "Cardiffcenturyman" is...but can't say:huh:
