TROUBLE IS UNLESS HES CAPABLE OF COMPRESSING A ROD HE WONT BE GETTING THE ANSWER TO HIS DREAMS IE. 150 YDS PLUS. HES MAKING THE MISTAKE MOST PEOPLE MAKE WHEN THEY FIRST START SEA FISHING ILL BUY MYSELF A ZIPPIE AND AN ABU 6500 AND I WILL THEN BE UP WITH THE BIG BOYS!!!! SORRY IT DOESNT HAPPEN LIKE THAT, ITS DOWN TO THE THREE Ps PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND MORE PRACTICE. IF HE INSISTS ON A ZIPPIE START WITH A SECOND HAND 2500LM WHICH IS QUITE USER FRIENDLY ANDCOSTS ABOUT 125 SQUIDS ON FLEABAY. JOIN A CASTING CLUB GET YOUR TECHNIQUE SORTED THEN ONCE YOU ARE UP TO SAY 170 YARDS TRY GETTING A GO WITH SOME OF THE OTHER GUYS RODS , THEN IF YOU THINK THERE IS ANY BENEFIT START BUILDING ON WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW AND ONCE YOU HAVE THE CONFIDENCE THEN AND ONLY THEN GO FOR YOUR NEW GLORY POLE! IVE BEEN SHORE FISHING FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS AND STILL FEEL I CAN LEARN FROM THE "BIGGER BOYS" YOU NEVER KNOW IT ALL!

If you're like me you've not read the other post as it's in caps, but I'm guessing it's a bit like this...

If he can only cast 50yds what's the point in getting him a Zziplex? Get him something that he will be able to use and will benefit from. Admitedly there are a few Zzippies that he could probably use, but he'd be better off with a sensible rod choice that he likes. Give him a Zzippie and a, say, a Daiwa Supercast and he'll probably not be able to tell the difference and he will probably be better off with the Daiwa.

Zzippies are great rods, but don't consider buying one for the sake of it.

M4 Hi flex or Primo Syncro.
And He should get them whipped colbalt blue tipped with silver please, With full japanese shrink butt, fuji or talon reel seat! Black mighty brite tip tape.
Cause then he can sell it to me for a very good cheap price when he realises  1: They dont catch him anymore fish and 2: Neither of them may suit his casting style.
Just pm me once hes decided there is more to choosing a rod than the name on the blank( All be it a very good one!!! )

Tend to go with the above posts, However if he is dead set on a zziplex and where you live and will be fishing, get a m 427, and as said practice practice and practice. You wont know how he will do until he casts the thing that is a fact..

I'm guessing he will be fishing mainly the Colliery beaches and Parton? If you can find a decent one get him a 2nd hand 2500, perfect rod for those beaches unless it is really rough, great rod for him to learn to cast with and you should pick one up for around 100 notes.

Another option would be a Federation, v. similar to the 2500, may be a little more expensive. Team either of those with a 65 mag elite or a 7HT and he has the perfect set up for the coming winter.

If you've got money to burn then an HSM or even the Primo Synchro are great rods, forgiving in the cast and the Primo Synchro can be used for mixed ground as well.

Despite what's said above not all ZZippys are tournament poles, Terry makes some damn fine fishing rods as well, and has done for many years.

If you know anyone coming over to fish the mull of Galloway, I have a 2500lm up for sale which will be perfect for him, plus the badge is big so every one will know it's a zzippy lol

I do not agree with the people above me, just cause you can not cast does not mean you should not have quality equipment. As i understand it the north east coast you do not have to cast very far anyway, its all about putting the bait into the most snaggy ground. I would look at an XTR or Bullet, that way you have the grunt to pull up the fish from the snags

You'd be much better off getting him some casting lessons which don't cost much (quite often free) which he will defenitely bennifit from technique wise and distance wise, then consider getting him a zippie.
Also how old is this kid, because most zziplex rods are all over 13ft which may be too much of a handfull depending on his size and strength.
When I was a kid getting into sea fishing which was only 6 years ago (I'm 16 now) I was just using your avarge 12ft rod and a fixed spool and I had one lesson on ground casting and I was able to put a bait 70yds out. 6 years later, quite a few casting lessons and a lot of practice I can now put a bait 140yds out and Im using a zziplex hsm (only had it 5 months)
I know when I was 10 years old I really would of liked a zzipie or century rod but looking back now if I did get a zzipie or century at that age my casting performance would of gone down.
Hope this helps and makes sense.
Elliot.

I wasnt saying dont get one. Just as long as he is aware that having a
Zzippy wont necessarily make him a better angler or catch him any more fish. Which unfortunatly a lot of beginners (if thats what he is ) believe.
I myself am considering buying one (2nd hand) after nearly 30yrs of sea angling, and after giving it a go casting it. It has made me realise casting lessons would be the best idea to get the best out of it
and to actually justify owning such a rod (especially if buying new)

If he wants a zziplex then let him get a zziplex-not all zziplexes require the user to be a soopa doopa mega caster.Anyway It'd be like asking santa for a scalextric and waking up Xmas morning to race 'n' chase. if that's what the lad wants fair enough - good choice really as he wouldnt lose too much on resale value if he decides to get rid in the future- dunno what i'd go for personally as I'm not a great fan of Zippies- only one i've still got is a B14- others have come and gone but each to their own . Anyway- I thought Geordies used nowt but Senchoooreeeee's or Axe's:cry:

Must say the zziplexes sound like great fishing rods and I agree with some of the posters, it's nice to have good quality tackle. And a good quality rod can make a difference to your whole fishing experience. For me though these rods are expensive, even second hand. I had my first few casting lessons a couple of months back and by far that's the biggest difference I've seen, went between casting 35-50yards to 120 odd yards at times. Casting lessons are well worth it and probably the bigest single thing you can do to improve. IMHO there's no difference between the top spec rods and mid range ones unless you can use them proplerly and that's where they come into their own. Now I'd love to own one and one day I will but right now I know that there'd be no point as I already have a good enough rod for my needs and abilities. A bit like buying an Aston Martin for your first car when you only use it for popping to the shops

Think this thread could do with getting back on track, op was asking for peoples opinion as to which zziplex they could recommend. Surely having superior angling knowledge does not in some way entitle a person to own a zziplex more than someone else.

Get him the most expensive one, i dont think it will improve his casting but it will elevate his status on here to superstar. Seriously though it is a pitty the amount of hype on this forum about Zziplex rods, is having an effect on younger anglers.
Have you ever owned one or cast with one or even picked one up cause all you ever do is slate them and there owners!
If this guy wants to own a superb well thought out blank that will last years and years and do the job intended, then good on him. Why not get one of the best if he can afford it.
If on the other hand he sees them as a aid to instantly catching more fish or casting further then he is buying one for the wrong reasons. Most people who own them, and i say most, will have probably fished for quite some time throughout there life and will see owning a zzippy as a sound investment in there sport. There is nothing wrong with this
I am about to get one. I dont care what the sticker on the blank says, I will happily put it in the rest alongside my AFAW or my Daiwa or even my Ron Thompson. Im not buying it to "elevate my status" Im buying it because its a improvement over what im currently using and reconise this fact.
As for "hype" well maybe so, but there must be a reason for the "hype" its been going on for longer than the internet or this site along with rods/blanks from conoflex and Harrison!

And too the OP, you seem to have a very nice list there as your favourite rods let him borrow each one and see how he gets on with them first.
