A Couple of Good Days Out On the Lleyn

We came up to Pwllheli on Friday night and are here for the week. It looks like the sun Gods are going to smile on us :)

So I went out on Saturday with my son Mark and grandson Jack. After crossing the estuary we found the wind was a bit too rough for the 6 year old and so we headed back in-shore. A quick drift through Muddy Hollow on the way produced plenty of Whiting and a few Dabs. Jack had never caught a Dab before and was pretty pleased with himself.

We move in further and picked up some doggies and Jack had his first couple of Greater Weevers which he gave a wide berth.

So two new species for Jack, and a start for me and Mark.

Today, we were joined by Lofty and headed off to Bardsey to see what was about. it didn't take us long to find the Pollack, Wrasse, Launce and Sandeel.

Well, it didn't take Lofty and Mark that is. It took me a little longer (according to them!) but I did eventually find a few including a female Cuckoo to go with the Ballans. But as we left, they made it abundantly clear that, whilst it wasn't a competition, I'd been left in the blocks :rolleyess:

Just before we left btw, Lofty spotted a Peregrine Falcon fly over us. We watched as it turned and flew straight at a colony of nesting Gulls. Boy did they squawk and scatter as it flew into them! Awesome.

It seemed a bit premature to me to be gloating over the hors d'oeuvres when we still had the main course to come. And so it turned out as we headed off to a mark that threatened to produce some of the "angry" fish. A few miles we dropped anchor and some ruby dubby. It didn't take long.

A gentle tap developed a little and as I pick up the rod, the reel started peeling off line. Game on! It took about 15 minutes to get the thing in as it kept taking line off my little Avet reel and 12-20lb class Saltist Braid rod. Eventually I got it under control and as we got it to the boat it looked like a nice 35-40lb Tope. But a rookie mistake on my part saw me pull the hook as I tried to tail it into the boat. Damn!

Lofty and Mark promptly dropped back in and were straight into a pair of Huss of around 10lb and 8lb respectively. Over the next couple of hours Lofty hooked another Tope but it spit the hook after a few minutes. We had around half a dozen more Huss until I dropped down a Pollack Livebait from Bardsey. Within seconds I was into my second Tope of the day, and this time I made no mistake (not least because Lofty tailed it in, instead of me ;)).

Not so big this time but a tidy 25lber (guessing).

Mark finished with another Huss and all too soon it was time to head back to the Marina. Time really does fly when you're having fun and we were having fun.

Hopefully, another few sessions to be had later in the week :)
