On a recent visit to Vic to see the kids, I saw a range of interesting large centre pin reels made by Alvey. They were designed to swivel around by 90 degrees for casting.

Never seen these for sale in the UK but they looked good, so was wondering how suitable would they be for beach casting a 4oz to 6oz lead?

I own 2 Alvey 6'' reels [along with penns, shimano's, Abu's etc etc] both bought in Oz, they're the best reels ever invented in my opinion, they''ll cast 8 oz, and with practise a very good distance. One thing to remember is you must have your rod rung especially for an Alvey sidecast reels to work properly.

Great reels; indestructible almost. Need plenty of practice in casting them to get a decent ping. As Batenburg says, need a proper Alvey rod, massive first ring, half way up rod cause the line comes off the reel in geet coils. They work best with long rods; 12ft min.

Those mulloway in my avatar were both caught using an Alvey 8". 600m of 30lb mono.

:fishing: I've seen them for sale in the UK but they didn't sem to catch on, probably too retro. :fishing:
When I was a kid in the early 70's and started fishing on the North East beaches around Horden and Seaham they were very popular with the top anglers, I used one for a while but remember getting loads of line twist.
They must be good if they're still around.
