thanks for the update! I can tell you've spent a bit of time in Ascension. Can I ask you what time of year you'd say was best for catching sharks from the shore? I'm expecting to go at some point in the first half of next year, and I'll mainly be jigging, chunking for tuna etc. so not trying to time my arrival with the blue marlin, and I know I can't do anything more than cross my fingers with the scad run, so that just leaves getting the night time shore fishing optimal... any suggestions?

Cheers

Tim

I never tried until after Christmas and had them right up to July when I left
I did notice that I hooked the bigger ones when the swell was massive but unfortunately could never turn them back to shore!
Biggest we had was around 80lb but plenty of the small ones and we were getting them during the light hours aswell
I tended to fish a running ledger with circle hooks and waited for them to run!
The biggest surprise for me was that 90% of the runs came when using a star light next to the hook!
North wast bay was the top mark with one hook and 2 hook coming second

Very interesting Amphibian, i followed your mega thread with great interest and envy!
You dont happen to have a pic of your setup.....wouldnt mind actually seeing it rather than trying to imagine it, the star light idea! never heard of that one.

Fry are in from the same day I originally posted
My setups were a fifteen foot ugly stik (now sold)
An Abu 7500 (stolen) 100lb braid 60lb leader
The other setup was an old fixed spool beach caster and reel 60lb mono.
I'll have a look to see if the dam thieves left any of the hooks I used but line was simply 250lb mono (4ft long) heavy duty swivel 2/0 or more
Think the circle hooks were size 10/0 - 14/0
And not bigs bits of bait.
You going back out again??

Sorry to hear you got your stuff nicked......

I would go again the only problem is that you can only go out with Kimbo or someone else for a few hours in the evening or pay massive money with Harmattan, other than that i struggled to catch anything else apart from the usual Jacks etc during the day and getting hammered by the trigger. I went in July by the way....

Whats the best time of year fordaytime shore fishing for a greater cross section of species....shark etc?

Have the fry come and gone?

I would say after Xmas for the sharks
And just seen a post on FB from the harmattan the fry are still in some one had a nice rainbow runner from the shore
Now there are one or two spots to get these from the shore about 1/2 mile from English bay on the right hand side along with big amber jacks

So when they say they are 'in' does that mean they're around generally or they are on the shore.....i suppose it means both!, as theyre going to move around.

In answer to a previous post, i do plan on going back someday as i love the island, but i've got a few other trips planned before then.
