As it is my birthday on Monday, my wife wanted to know what to get the man who has everything
.
The one thing I would really like on the boat is a baiting up and filleting table at gunnel height rather than having to kneel on the deck.
I had a look online and only found one which fitted in the rod holders. It was ÂŁ70 for the table and another ÂŁ40 for the rod holder mount:yucky:.
I decided to have a go at making one myself instead.
I paid a visit to a local company that supplies roofing materials etc for conservatories and saw just the thing I needed, a sheet of 10mm
hi-density plastic in an 8ft x 4ft sheet. The cost....ÂŁ5! It turned out that this is part of the packaging supplied when they get in polycarb sheets and they were happy for a fiver to go in the charity box.
I cut it to size using a double layer for the bottom glued together with a flexible mastic. I then cut and fitted the sides, using screws as well for extra strength.
I made a couple of slots towards the rear to hold filleting knives and a couple of holes to hold a knife sharpener and pliers.
Finally I drilled a few 16mm holes for drainage.
My boat has a teak top to the gunnels which has 35mm slots as hand grips along its length so I made a piece to fit the underside of the board which would fit in one of the slots and then a piece of wood (for now, until I can find something better) which would turn and lock the board into position.
The last bit was to screw a chopping board to it. Total time to make it was about 3 hours, but then I am not exactly a DIY expert!
For a total cost of about a tenner I had a perfect sized Bait / filleting table for the boat and saved myself (the wife!) ÂŁ100
.
Now what can I get for my birthday instead:g:... I am sure I could do with a new reel to join the rest of my collection, better send her down the tackle shop now:secret:.
