Hi,

I'm moving to Gourdon at the end of this month and thought it would be a good oportunity to start sea fishing. I've done a bit of fly fishing but don't have a clue about sea fishing.

Can anyone give me any hints or tips for fishing off of the pier at Gourdon for example what I can expect to catch, best time to fish best bait to use. Is there any restrictions on when or who can fish there?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Stuart

If your just starting out, id head to st’cyrus beach for a flattie hunt, get yourself use to your rod and casting for st’cyrus you need 4/6oz leads, 2/3 hook flapper rigs, size 1/2 aberdeen hooks, lug and macky for bait and you wont need to cast long, no losing tackle as it all sand you’ll be fishing on

Come summer head to the rock north of catterline for a wrasse hunt with spinning rod , float, size 1 / 2 hooks again with lug, rag and crab for bait

NOW come the winter your all ready to catch the cod at gourdon and berive when the sea is up and the east winds blaw with pulley rigs and 4/0, 5/0, 6/0 hooks, 6/7oz gripper leads and fish baits macky/bluey with the tide coming in

There is a good number of anglers round about your door step thats on here, all good lads so see speak to other angler you meet on the beach as there nothing like local knowledge

Sure some will be along to add to this

Happy hunting

i am not sure if you know it yet mate but you just moved into one of the best cod fishing areas in the northeast and i dont mean the pier although it does fish quite well during a southerly blow.there are loads of marks within a 5 min drive from there but you will have to talk to anglers on the pier to find out about hot ones. here are a few summer ones right on yer doorstep for red codling. go down to the harbour turn left go past the lifeboat shed for 100yrds on yer right you will see garages . stop and park on the wasteland directly across from that.cross the road go between the garages and the houses oppisite. go out the rocks from there and you will find a deep gully. it fishes 3hrs either side of low water. baits are always peeler crab for the cod or ragworm for wrasse n coalies dont be surprised to get up to a dozen fish out of there the same mark also fishes strong after the sea starts to settle after an onshore blow in the winter but wait untill it settles right down. if you continue further along the same road to the very end there is a foot path leading to bervie head down that 70 or 80 yrds turn 90deg to your right.you will see a horseshoe type bay head out to the righthand side of the bay. you should cross a natural type bridge with a 30ft gully pass that and head out to the most easterly rock there.short casts are all that is needed here 20-30yrds same baits as the last mark. its sometimes a bit of hit or miss? big tides are best here if you get on a good day you will be a very happy lad red cod go into double figures here but the bulk of them being 2-4lb ones use rotten bottoms here tackle losses can mount up quite quickly if your not prepared. and watch that gully when the tide floods as the natural bridge is your cut off point. hope that helps iam sure you will see plenty anglers there during winter . regards alf
