Best bargain beach rod?

Hi, I am looking for some advice on beach rods.

I am skint, and being forced to consider selling my Century rods. I bought them a few years back, overkill for me really. A friend of mine has a pair of Abu Esprit 13” beach rods and I blooming love em! Seem as nice to fish with as my Century’s, which no doubt shows my lack of casting expertise! They certainly cast well enough and the bite detection is plenty good enough.

Trouble is, I can’t sell my Century’s until I know that I can replace them with something usable (but a lot cheaper) for general beach fishing. I cast 4-7oz, usually 5 or 6. I want something fairly well made with decent bite detection but good bang for buck. I have no clue where to start. I never go in shops and I could only name a few brands so I am dumb on the whole subject. I fish clean beaches mostly, but I may go into rough stuff if the rod allows. If poss I would quite like a 3 piece as I find two long pieces (Century's!) can be cumbersome to carry in dark on rough paths, handy for poking eyes out though!

Wondering if anyone here could recommend a make/model as similar to the Abu Esprit as possible, since I can’t find those any more (shame). Thanks

P.S. - after an hour or two reading threads on here, I have the following list which all sound possibly suitable. Any comments on these would be appreciated. Get your opinions out!

Penn Squadron or Rampage 2 Surf
Sonic SKS Black
Akios Fury
Daiwa Sandstorm
Mitchell Suprema 3.0 Surf

Agree with Matt the competition surfs are meant to be cracking rods for the money, if you could find another pair going at that price then that would be ideal. I use a Blackrock Renaissance ZT4200 which is a 3 piece 14ft conti for clean ground hounds and rays and been really pleased with it so far, others also speak highly of them and for £99 I think they're superb. Also have a Vercelli Enygma Speziale which is a similar rod, also below £100.

Short for continental rods, use mine for clean ground mostly beaches and also estuaries if I need distance, they're great to cast with, I'm not a great caster myself but can send a bait out with ease with a simple over the head. Think they're definitely worth a look at, wouldn't be suitable for rough ground though but tbh at that price no rod will carry out two very different purposes well

Thanks. I am also trying to learn what the difference is between a "rough ground rod" and a clean beach rod. Just stronger is that about it?
I have some old basher pier type rods which can suffice for any rock stuff, this is mainly for sandy beaches but a good distance cast would be nice, if someone can show me how. haha

One thing I have never been sure about.... which can do both best, multiplier or FS? I generally used an Abu 6500 but wouldn't mind the option of a FS now and then. Is that possible with either, or is it best to get one to do both? (I am not honestly sure of the differences)

Hi beachcomber, have you considered anything else you have to sell rather than the rods? I've sold rods in the past when I've been skint and always regretted it and when I've been flush I've replaced them, thing is about sea fishing it's a cheap hobby when you have all the gear all you may need to buy is a bit of bait , sell one rod and keep the other or is that not an option , in reality any rod will help you catch fish, most brands have a decent rod to there name

Thanks. Yes I have been around and around on that decision! I have nothing else I can sell unfortunately. But if I get 450-500 for my pair of Century's, and then spend say £140 each for what currently looks the best best (SandStorm, Penn Rampage runner up, maybe?!) then I have only pocketed £170-200 quid, wondering if it's worth it. Thing is, I think the Century's are too good for me. My mate's Abu Esprit is a joy to use and cost him £90 each. If only I could get a pair of those for max £150 used, I would be very happy about doing this.

Hi beachcomber, Gerry’s fishing tackle have these. Sunset Solica Pro – 14ft 4-8oz 3 piece

This is our entry-level 3 piece rod for the UK and is simply blows everything else away on the market. We have focused on making this rod suitable to stand up to larger tides and swells and making sure it’s fitted with a more powerful tip than the average continental rod.

The rod itself is still very easy to compress with a simple overhead thump. We have got our best distances using 4 and 5oz weights however it can cast larger leads when needed.

We have caught Thornback rays and Smoothounds to double figures and rod coped really well. Like with all the Sunset beach rods. Just brilliant!

I have always been impressed by the sunset blanks.

I went from a pair of penn rampage (one mk1 one mk 2) to a pair of 6 and baits and now a pair of century fireblades, the 6 and baits we're a bit on the heavy side which is why I bought the fireblades. Went back to use the rampages on a trip to Cornwall recently and forgot how good they are. They're quite soft so wouldn't be great pulling out of snags on rough ground but can handle 6oz and bait in a decent rip.

That's VERY interesting to me as I LOVE two things about those: the Hard case, and the THREE sections!
If they can cast 6oz (not often more than 5 here but in winter i do go to 6) and have good bite detection, they look a cracking bargain as even new for under £100

great thanks, so there is a way to test it, but it costs a rod to find out if it couldn't do it. Gotcha. :D :D
I suspected much the same, I guess some brands would 'over engineer' things to ensure they keep their loyal following, 'some others' just wanna sell a shiny thing to a Manpie and if it breaks, they get another sale :D

See how you get on using lighter leads, You'll soon get to know what the rod can take, A lot of 6 oz rated rods will easily handle 7 or 8 oz leads but be careful with lighter rods .

Right yes that makes sense. I suppose you will feel the rod struggling when you're getting near the limit. Thanks

PS I am considering somehow keeping the Century TTSM's for a while longer. I should have a bit more money soon (fingers crossed, if I can get a pair of tights and a sawn-off as planned :D) and if I do, I'd quite like to get a Daiwa Sandstorm (used) and maybe a Penn Rampage too, then have a play and actually fish with em before letting the Century's go. It's gonna be a squeeze, but I might be able to hang on. I would hate to be without any rods and I know if I sell em now the money will vanish and I will find it hard to pull it together without the misses getting her grubby paws on it :D

I would just add that although old I have a lot of respect for some of the old penn rods...... and they can be had dirt cheap, the Venom, Vendetta, INXS were always great to fish with, I had a chuck on a venom last year and was pretty surprised how far it went and how light the blank was. If a tidy pair came up then they would be around 130 quid and that would be a deal I would consider.

You could look at the Imax Intenze its the RT Accellerator succesor or any of the Tronix Banzai range which come as two or three piece rods and you can use a fixed spool or Multiplier on all of them . And you would only have to sell one rod, Bonus (y)
P.s Look at Veals mail order for write ups .

In what way? Is that another vote for "KEEP THE DAMN CENTURIES"??!
It may end up being that for now, not sure I can part until I have at least had my hands on a suitable replacement. A sale fell through anyway so I am being forced by that somewhat
